Syracuse, New York (May 1, 2024) – In recent hours, it has come to light that the leader of encampment demonstrations on Syracuse University campus as part of the pro-Palestinian movement called for violence against Jews. New York State Senate candidate and current Salina Town Supervisor Nick Paro supports the right to peacefully protest. However, Paro is appalled at these statements and stands firmly with the Jewish community at his alma mater and nationally during a time where we have seen these demonstrations escalate to violent acts. At Columbia University, for example, demonstrators stormed an academic building and had to be removed by force. As it stands, Aziza Zahran, who tweeted “Palestine will be free from the river to the sea, death to Israel death to Jews on judgment day you will lose.,” has spoken at the encampment as an organizer according to The Daily Orange reporting and the SU Student Association has put out a message to the student body condemning her statements. Paro had the following to say on these developments:
“As a proud alumnus of Syracuse University College of Law, I stand firmly with the Jewish community on and off campus during this challenging time. It is essential that all students are safe and supported by the school, and I condemn these disgusting and bigoted calls to violence. During a time of such heated division, we must come together to foster understanding, respect, and a sense of community among all Central New Yorkers. Aziza Zahran can take her genocidal ideology elsewhere.”
