Syracuse, N.Y. – At approximately 3:59 a.m., the Syracuse Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 211 Essex St. Within 4 minutes, Truck Company 3 and Engine Company 5 from Fire Station 5 (114 N. Geddes St.) were on scene of the 2-story wood framed 2-family dwelling. The first arriving firefighters reported two structures on fire, 211 Essex and 213 Essex, a 2 ½ story wood-framed apartment building.
The first arriving chief officer upgraded the assignment to a 2nd Alarm. As other companies were arriving on scene, firefighters initiated operations to extinguish the fire and search for potential victims.
Firefighters working in 213 Essex St. were ordered out of the building due to the heavy volume of fire in the attic space. Master stream appliances were used to flow large amounts of water onto the fire at 213 Essex St. Both fires were reported out approximately 90 minutes after the initial dispatch.
The occupants of 211 Essex St. were awake at the time of the fire and heard a noise in the rear of the house. They discovered the fire while checking on the noise and alerted the occupants of 213 Essex St. to the fire.
