Firefighters Extinguish House Fire on Myrtle Street

Syracuse, N.Y. – At 8:14 P.M. Friday December 3rd the Syracuse Fire Department was called to 212 Myrtle Street for a reported house fire.  The first units were on scene in just three minutes, and observed smoke and flames issuing from the attic.  Firefighters immediately began searching the large two-family home for any trapped occupants, while simultaneously working to gain access to the attic to extinguish the blaze.

It took more than two dozen firefighters approximately thirty minutes to bring the fire under control.  Multiple fire hoses had to be utilized, and a hole was cut in the roof to alleviate the tremendous amount of heat and smoke in the attic. After thoroughly checking all areas of both apartments, firefighters were able to confirm that everyone had escaped the building safely.  There is moderate damage to the building, and the local chapter of the American Red Cross will be assisting four displaced occupants with temporary shelter and other needs.  Nearby homes were not damaged.

The Syracuse Police Department, AMR, and National Grid also responded to the scene.  Members of the Fire Investigation Bureau are currently working to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

The Syracuse Fire Department has responded to over 20,000 calls for service so far this year.
