Syracuse, N.Y., May 30, 2024 – Empower Federal Credit Union, a not-for-profit financial cooperative with branches across New York State, announces its sponsorship of the Syracuse Juneteenth Cultural Festival set to take place on Friday, June 14, 2024 in Clinton Square.
Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is a significant occasion that honors African American culture, history and progress. The historic day marks when news of emancipation reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, T.X., on June 19, 1865.
As a community-focused financial institution, Empower FCU is committed to supporting initiatives that foster unity, education and empowerment. “Sponsoring the Syracuse Juneteenth Cultural Festival aligns with our values and our ongoing efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within our community,” said Chris Keller, Chief Marketing Officer, Empower FCU. “We are honored to support our community’s Juneteenth celebrations. This event not only commemorates a pivotal moment in American history but also provides an opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate our diverse heritage and reflect on the progress we continue to make toward equality and justice.”
Central New York has significance in U.S. emancipation history as it was once a key Underground Railroad destination for freedom seekers. The celebration of Juneteenth in Syracuse takes place on those historic grounds.
Official Syracuse Juneteenth festivities begin on Saturday, June 8, 2024 and continue through Wednesday, June 19 2024. Festivities will kick off at City Hall for the flag raising ceremony at 12:00 p.m. This year’s events and festival will feature live music, cultural performances, educational workshops, local vendors and family-friendly activities.
