“On the Road to 50” The National Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA)

The National GMWA will be 50 years old in 2017.  It was founded by the late renowned artist, Rev. James Cleveland, whose vision was to create a platform where gospel enthusiasts, artists, choir members, performers and writers could come together and share the heritage of Gospel music. Since its inception, not only has the vision come to fruition, but has blossomed to over 161 chapters cross the country, including several internationally. For more information visit the website, Gmwanational.net. Each year the holds sessions for its upcoming convention held in a selected city the same year.  All are invited to join a local chapter in or near your area, thereby, becoming a member of the national GMWA. During the Board Meeting, the Colleges and Universities participate in Collegiate Night. It provides the opportunity for students to participate and share their performances with each other, since the Board meeting is held before schools dismiss for the summer.  For more information on Collegiate Night, contact Dr. Hillsman, Collegiate Chair (Email: jhillsman@twcny.rr.com) This year in July, GMWA convention convened in Birmingham, Alabama.  Choirs, Artists, Record Industry, Announcers and delegate were in full numbers.  The convention consisted of exhibits, artist showcases, academic classes, Mass Choir showcases, Youth Division, Contemporary Young Adult choir, Daily Bread (Ministers), Announcers Guild and much more. We were glad to be in Birmingham, tour and visit the historical Civil Rights Institute, and visited the 16th Street Baptist Church, where in 1963 a bomb exploded, killing four young girls who were attending Sunday School, and injuring more than twenty others. Motown Revisited – June is Proclaimed as National Music Month

Let us celebrate National Music month by revisiting our music heritage contributors and keeping the history alive.  I recently revisited Motown in Detroit, Michigan, while going there to attend a funeral of a relative. I did not hesitate going by the historic Motown site. Therefore, I went to visit the historical Motown USA (Hitsville) Museum. Motown is an American record company that was founded by Berry Gordy, Jr. as Tamla Records on January 12, 1959 and incorporated as Motown Record Corporation on April 14, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan. The combination of Motor and Town, has also become a nickname for Detroit, according to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. There are educational guides that give the entire history of Motown.  Motown is one of the most influential independent record companies in American history. Hitsville USA is the nickname given to Motown’s first headquarter, located at Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan.  The Motown Musical is being presented and performed across the country, bringing great recollections of the Motown sounds that we may never forget.  Such artists that recorded and embedded a profound music sounds were Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Berry Gordy, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Four Tops, the Miracles, Martha & the Vandellas, Lionel Richie, Commodores, Marvelettes, Tammi Terrell, The Funk Brothers and the list goes on.  See the full list of Motown artists from the 50’s to the 2000’s. Let us celebrate each others culture by appreciating the diversity and global contributions.  Coming Soon! The Month of September is Gospel Music Heritage Month. Let’s continue celebrating.

Syracuse Stage Presents Acclaimed New American Play, “The Christians “

“[Lucas] Hnath is one of the brightest new voices of his generation.” – THE NEW YORK TIMES “A play that people of faiths of all stripes can engage with on a meaningful level.” – NPR     (Syracuse, NY) – One of the most talked about new plays in American theatre comes to Syracuse when Syracuse Stage presents Lucas Hnath’s critically acclaimed The Christians, April 6 – 24, in the Archbold Theatre at the Syracuse Stage/SU Drama Complex, 820 E. Genesee St. Since its premiere at the Humana Festival of New American Plays at the famed Actors Theatre of Louisville, The Christians has been produced at numerous theatres including Playwrights Horizons in New York. The New York Times called it one of the best plays of the season and called playwright Hnath one of the brightest new voices of his generation. Set in a large, contemporary, non-denominational Christian church, The Christians is performed with lively theatricality that emulates a Sunday service. The actors use hand-held microphones throughout and much of the performance has the rhythm and feel of a sermon. A live choir, under the direction of composer Michael Keck, sings gospel songs. The choir at Syracuse Stage is made up of local members of the community. The substance of The Christians concerns the impact of a decision by the congregation’s popular pastor to announce a change of heart and mind concerning a matter of doctrine. The decision has unexpected and unintended consequences for the pastor, his family, and the congregation. Throughout, playwright Hnath steadfastly avoids taking sides.  His concern is not to make a determination of right or wrong, but rather to explore the widening divide that makes communication and understanding increasingly difficult. “I have a powerful urge to communicate with you, but I feel there is an insurmountable distance between us,” the pastor, named Paul, says at one point. Producing artistic director Tim Bond directs the Syracuse Stage production. He believes that Hnath’s observations could be applied to any number of subjects that create rifts between people. Hnath has chosen religion as his subject to contextualize the action and to prompt an examination about “our deepest and, often, most noble desires and motivations and yearnings,” as a review in Christianity Today noted. This production marks Bond’s final directorial effort as Syracuse Stages producing artistic director. In July, he moves to the University of Washington in Seattle where he joins the theatre faculty as a full professor. In many ways, The Christians is a fitting capstone to his nine-year tenure. It is a play that encourages community and invites people of all faiths, believers and non-believers, to try to overcome the seemingly insurmountable divides evident in so many aspects of the contemporary world. Lucas Hnath grew up in a Christian household in Orlando, Florida. During his childhood, he expected to become a preacher. He attended college at New York University, where he studied pre-med before switching to dramatic writing. He went on to earn both a BFA and an MFA in Dramatic Writing from the university. Hnath now teaches as part of the dramatic writing faculty at the university. His previous works include Isaac’s Eye, Death Tax, and Red Speedo. For The Christians, Hnath has received the Kesselring Prize and the Steinberg/ACTA New Play Award, among other awards. GMWA Collegiate Night 2016  in Las Vegas “Rocked Again” Collegiate Night at the GMWA Board Meeting in Las Vegas “Rocked, It was off the chain”, stated one enthusiastic observer,  I did not realize the participation of Gospel music on college and university was so prominent on campuses. Dr. Hillsman, Music Educator, says that Spiritual and Gospel music as a genre, has come a long way for it has influenced music on a global basis. There is wide participation and inclusion in programs and the curriculum.  Many schools are providing academic course credits. The study of music of other cultures will show similarity in the characteristics of African American music (call and response, improvisation, cross rhythms, syncopation, etc. See Dr. Hillsman’s book, “Gospel Music: An African American Art Form, www. Friesen Press for detailed information”).  Classical composers such as Anton Dvorak, used the spiritual “Goin’ Home” theme in one of his symphonies. Many other composers such as Bach, Handel’s (Messiah) and incorporated cultural idioms. Collegiate Night in Las Vegas held an audience of approximately 800.  Representing the Collegiate Night included youth and adult performers. The night focused on the theme, “Gospel Goes to College”.  A jubilant opening consisted of Prof. Latonya Wrenn of Bowie State University and Director of the Bowie State University Gospel Choir, who combined her classical works with spiritual, gospel, and ending in the composition, “God Bless America”.  The audience exploded in applause.  Other performers were the Natomas Drum Corp, Sacremento, California, Soloist, Yardley Griffin, Las Vegas Youth (Six Sisters), The GMWA Youth/Adult Contemporary Choir, and others. Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration “We are still working on the dream: It’s a Day on-Not a day off”

For over three decades, Dr. Joan Hillsman, former Washington, D.C. resident and music educator, began a program within her church, New Southern Rock Baptist Church in Washington, D. C. under the auspices of its Music Department. This eventually became a popular venue for the community, as they would come together for at least one hour to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, through speeches, music, poetry and dance. “The audience has grown over the years, and the community looks forward to this event by their participation”, says Dr. Hillsman. The Pastor, Dr. Rudolph White, and committee headed by Trustee Walter Young, Ermyn Roberts, and other participants have used the funds to support the King Center for Social Justice in Atlanta, Georgia, and later to the Dr. King Memorial on the Mall in Washington, D. C.   Dr. Hillsman relocated to Syracuse, New York. Last year one of the prominent churches in Syracuse and its congregation, Tucker Missionary Baptist Church, collaborated and held a service at the same time as Washington, D.C., and the two did audio/video clips of the simultaneous celebrations.  “It was an outstanding service’, stated Eric Dickson, program coordinator at Tucker, and Minister of Music. Well, Dr. Hillsman is on her way, still working on the dream.  This time an added feature is to pick up materials from the prominent Ebenezer Church in Atlanta, Georgia for distribution to programs commemorating Dr. King, upon request from Joan Hillsman’s Music Network, Inc. (JHMN), as a resource. For further information on ideas to start “A Day On-Not a Day Off”, email: jhillsman@twcny.rr.com.  Dr. Hillsman received a Community Service Award last year at the Annual Service in DC for her dedicated works there and beyond.
