Announcing the Recipients 2019 Light Work Grants in Photography

Light Work is pleased to announce the 45th annual Light Work Grants in Photography. The 2019 recipients are Trevor Clement, Lali Khalid, and Reka Reisinger. Established in 1975, it is one of the longest-running photography fellowship programs in the country. Each recipient receives a $3,000 award, is published in Contact Sheet: The Light Work Annual, and will be part of a group exhibition at Light Work with fellow grant recipients Aug. 26 – Oct. 17, 2019. This year’s judges were Kimberly Drew (writer, curator, founder Black Contemporary Art), Eve Lyons (photo editor, The New York Times), and David Oresick (Executive Director, Silver Eye Center for Photography). Trevor Clement Trevor Clement is a visual artist, musician, and performance artist based in Syracuse, who uses photography with book art, installation, and sound. His photographic style opposes the cleanliness and simplicity of Western fine art photography by using heavy film grain, dust, and a modernized take on William Klein’s “technique of no taboos.” The do-it-yourself ethic, and the antisocial, violent, and sub-capitalist character of noise and hardcore-punk music all play a major role in Clement’s thinking about visual art. He has contributed to music projects such as FAITH VOID, HUNTED DOWN, and WHITE GUILT, and was a major force in BADLANDS, an underground music and art space for all ages in Syracuse. He was a Light Work Grant recipient in 2014, has shown his work across New York State, and exhibited at the Fotofanziner Fotobokfestival in Oslo (Norway), the NoFound Photo Festival in Paris, and the San Francisco Center for the Book. Recently, Clement has focused on producing ‘zines of his photos of professional wrestling and an audio interpretation of Gregory Halpern’s ZZYZX. See more of Clement’s Work here www.trevorclement.com Lali Khalid Lali Khalid addresses landscape and abstraction through documentary photography. Lali uses her work as a tool to explore themes of diaspora, identity, family, and home in her own life and the lives of people she photographs. Her images depict and document cultural and private conflicts, as well as emotive effects of natural light, through quiet, narrative allusions. She holds a B.F.A. in printmaking from the National College of Arts in Lahore (2003) and an M.F.A. in Photography from Pratt Institute (2009) where she was a Fulbright Scholar. She has shown her work in many galleries throughout Europe, Pakistan, and the US.  Khalid is currently an Assistant Professor of  Media Arts, Sciences and Studies at Ithaca College. “Through pictures of my family, personal journals, travels, and self-portraits, I document my personal experiences. The last couple of years have made me fathom and somewhat accept the difference, the difference others see. I have been in America since 2007, but somehow, I am still on the periphery, looking in. I am an outsider. Fighting the U.S. legal system and recognizing what it means to be “the other” has changed my approach to image making.” See more of Khalid’s Work here www.lalikhalid.com Reka Reisinger Reka Reisinger is a visual and historical archivist living in Burdett, New York. Reisinger graduated from Bard College (2004) and holds an MFA in photography from the Yale University School of Art. Reisinger was born in Budapest, Hungary, and returns frequently to photograph her homeland, the central focus of her work. Driven by a sense of urgency to collect visual cultural artifacts, she used her photographic practice to evoke the atmosphere she experienced during her frequent childhood visits to Hungary during the early post-communist era. Reisinger creates a sense of humor in her work while posing more profound questions about cultural identity during upheaval. She has participated in many group exhibitions nationally and internationally including The Camera Club of New York, The Center for Photography at Woodstock, Lisa Ruyter Gallery in Vienna (Austria), the Midlands Art Center in Birmingham (UK), The Sculpture Center in Long Island City, and the Swiss Institute in New York City. “I had the opportunity to experience Hungary at a pivotal time in its history subsequent to its opening up to the West. It was a unique period when antiquated traditions still persisted in the context of an increasingly modern world. I witnessed first hand an era when women in my grandmother’s village still wore the traditional costume, a time before telephones and extensive highway systems, a time before shopping malls and mass media. Simultaneously, I observed the influx of western culture and the Hungarian people’s varied reception and at times unusual interpretation of a lifestyle that was already familiar to me. My memories of this period shaped my interpretation of the Hungarian cultural landscape that I endeavor to portray in my photographs.” — Reka Reisinger See more of Reisinger’s Work here www.rekareisinger.com Light Work is pleased to welcome our new group of grantees to our vast alumni network that includes artists such as Robert Knight, Lida Suchy, and Nydia Blas, Allison Beondé, Thilde Jensen, and Costa Sakellariou, among many others.

Six Winners Selected out of 2,000 Entries (Photo)Small Game Hunting, Monroe County, Susan Janowski In celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8) and Women’s History Month, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the winners of the 2018 “WomenHuntFishNY” statewide photo contest. “In DEC’s first-ever statewide photo contest to celebrate women who hunt and fish in New York, we received an overwhelmingly positive response from women across the state. New York’s sportswomen were eager to share their photos and stories from their outdoor adventures,” said Commissioner Seggos. “We thank everyone who participated in the contest for their amazing submissions and appreciate their support for DEC’s ongoing efforts to encourage more New Yorkers to get outside and enjoy hunting and outdoor recreation.” After the contest was announced late last year, DEC received more than 2,000 photo entries, accompanied by hundreds of inspiring stories. The winning hunting images were divided into six categories: Before the Hunt, Genesee County: Renata Canaday (photographer), Carey Killion (subject) Big Game Hunting, Moose River Plains, Adirondacks: Rebecca Meigel Small Game Hunting, Monroe County: Susan Janowski After the Hunt, Western NY: Nichole Boxler Group, Broome County: Michelle Sanford and Cathy Sanford Youth, Wyoming County: Deanna Nikiel (photographer), Alexis Nikiel, Aleah Brauen (subjects) Winning entries will be featured in this year’s New York State Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide and future issues of the Conservationist magazine, in social media posts, on the DEC website, and other outreach efforts. While this fall’s contest focused on women hunters, DEC also received hundreds of fishing photos that will automatically be entered in a fishing photo contest that will be announced later this spring. According to the most recent National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the percentage of female hunters and anglers has steadily risen in recent years. In New York, women are the fastest growing segment of adult hunters; nearly 50,000 women are licensed to hunt in the state. What’s Going On at ArtRage – May 17 – June 9

ArtRage is no ordinary gallery, committed to breaking down the art world’s boundaries about who is welcome. “We believe that everyone has the right to art and that art is essential to building an open, just world. Our vision for change is one that creates a community of open-minded, tolerant individuals with an appreciation for the inclusion of art in everyday life. We offer the community an experience that encourages the breakdown of boundaries so that people can see themselves in the work and then in one another. We exhibit art that cultivates critical thinking skills; leading to question the power structures that exist in our society and to imagine other ways of life.” TOMORROW! Thursday, May 17, 2018 – 7pm Artist Talk with Keith Morris Washington Join us for an Artist Talk with painter Keith Morris Washington, the artist behind our current exhibition; Within Our Gates: Site and Memory in the American Landscape. Keith Morris Washington was inspired to create this series on lynchings in the mid-1990s. He prepared by researching at the archives of the Shomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City and the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, as well as by closely reading the book One Hundred Years of Lynchings by Ralph Ginzburg. These resources helped him to locate lynching sites, which he then traveled to and photographed, beginning in the summer of 1998. He then returned to his studio to paint from the photographs, both because he did not feel comfortable setting up his canvas in a strange place where his interest in local crimes was frequently not appreciated, and also because he is intrigued by the way people see the world through photographs. – From Basic Black, WGBH Boston. Washington is currently Associate Professor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, Massachusetts. He received an MFA in Painting from Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, Massachusetts. Friday, May 18, 2018 – 7pm – Volver – 2006 Directed by Pedro Almodóvar. WITHIN OUR GATES: Site and Memory in the American Landscape The Paintings of Keith Morris Washington

This exhibition is an exploration of lynching in America. The deceptively benign landscapes painted on large scale canvases, serve to both bear witness to our dark past and to remind us to be ever vigilant in our present. Kokomo, Miss., Jun. 28 — A black teenager who was found hanging from a tree in his front yard in what investigators ruled a suicide may instead have been lynched for dating two white girls, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Tuesday. Jackson asked Gov. Ronnie Musgrove and the U.S. Justice Department to launch an investigation into the death of 17-year-old Raynard Johnson. Standing under the pecan tree where Raynard’s body was found by his father June 15, the civil rights leader said that the death “had the smell of Emmett Till all around it.” Till was a black teenager killed in Mississippi in 1955 for supposedly whistling at a white woman.
