Syracuse, NY-On Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 5:25 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 1309 Lodi Street, on the City’s North Side. Firefighters from Station 2, on Lodi St., arrived at the scene moments later and found what appeared to be a pile of debris burning in the front of the two-story, multiple-family building. The first arriving companies investigated as additional units arrived at the scene and quickly realized that there was a fire on the first floor of the interior of the building. Incident commanders immediately transmitted a signal ‘99’, indicating a working fire.
As teams of firefighters moved hoses into the apartment where the fire was located, other teams of firefighters prepared to methodically search the entire building, starting with the fire apartment and working out from there. Crews were able to get water on the fire, which was located in the first-floor, center unit apartment, and stop it from spreading. As other crews moved hoses to different parts of the structure to check for any fire spread, search teams were able to confirm that all of the occupants had escaped prior to the Fire Department’s arrival. Firefighters did locate and rescue a dog during their searches. The bulk of the fire was knocked down after approximately 10 minutes, and the fire was declared out after approximately 30 minutes. Crews remained at the scene for more than three hours clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting investigators.
The building contains six apartments, and the fire occurred in the first floor of the center unit. That apartment suffered fire, smoke, and water damage. Other parts of the building also suffered smoke and water damage. At least three occupants were displaced by this fire; they are being assisted by the Red Cross. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined that the fire began in the living room of the first floor and was caused by an unattended candle. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.
A total of 38 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
