Dr. Mary Nelson organized the first Back-to-School Supply Giveaway in 2002 as an effort to reduce gun violence in this southside neighborhood. At first, Nelson treated neighborhood children and their families to a full-scale barbeque, with 850 parents, and youth in attendance. After the first year, Mary Nelson’s Back to School Backpack Giveaway grew as word spread about the need in this southside neighborhood. The event this year takes place on Saturday, August 17th at the corner of S. Salina and Wood Ave.
In addition to back-to-school supplies, community-based health initiatives have partnered. Along with food; assorted agencies will be on hand to provide health related information.
The event is well organized, yet free flowing with live entertainment, game area and vendors, and of course the barbeque. Donations can be dropped off at the Mary Nelson Youth Center, 2849 S. Salina Street.
