Syracuse City Auditor Alexander Marion, Onondaga County Legislator Maurice Brown, 50+ Tenants to Rally for Strong Good Cause Eviction Protections in Syracuse

Local electeds, tenants and advocates will demand the Syracuse Common Council opt in to a strong version of Good Cause Eviction to protect tenants from retaliatory evictions and egregious rent hikes.

Syracuse – The Syracuse Tenants Union, labor groups, faith groups, local electeds and others will hold a rally to call on the Syracuse Common Council to opt in to a strong version of Good Cause Eviction law.

Monday, Aug 12, 2024
Noon-1:00 PM at Syracuse City Hall,
233 East Washington Street, Syracuse, NY 13202

City Hall, Syracuse NY

Scheduled to speak: Syracuse City Auditor Alexander Marion, Onondaga County Legislator Maurice Brown, Syracuse Tenants Union, SEIU Local 200United, Citizen Action of New York, Greater Syracuse, Labor Council, AFL-CIO, Housing Justice for All, Uplift Syracuse

Background: For Syracuse families, rents are skyrocketing and housing conditions are deteriorating. Syracuse rents are rising faster than anywhere in the country. According to U.S. Census data, over half of Syracuse tenants are rent-burdened, spending 30% or more of their income on rent. At the same time, slumlords are failing to address severe health-related code violations in Syracuse properties, including lead; structural, sewage, plumbing, and electrical issues; infestations; and more. The combination of high rents and poor conditions have resulted in a dramatic 41% increase in homelessness for families with children in Syracuse in the past year, according to the Housing and Homeless Coalition of Central New York. Good Cause Eviction would help tenants stay in their homes while they demand repairs are made and keep rents under control. Syracuse Tenants Union is urging the Council to close the “LLC loophole” to ensure Good Cause would protect as many tenants as possible.
