The Syracuse Police Department is going through the Accreditation process

Checks & Balances “CALEA Accreditation gave our personnel a focus and direction with specific and measurable goals.” – Chief Mark Palmer, Coventry Police Department (CT)

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. is the Gold Standard in Public Safety. CALEA created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement’s major executive associations.

Site based assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive in Syracuse on Monday, August 19th, 2024, to examine all aspects of the Syracuse Police Department policy and procedures, management, operations and support services.

Verification by the assessors that the Syracuse Police Department meets the Commission’s comprehensive state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence. As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public portal, which can be found here: Accreditation Public Comment Portal

If an individual cannot access the portal, but would like to provide comments to the assessment team, they can do so by writing to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainsville, Virginia, 20155 or they can email comments to calea@calea.org.

Accreditation Public Comment Portal

The purpose of this public portal is to receive comments regarding an agency’s compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide the participating agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

IMPORTANT: CALEA is not an investigatory body and subsequently the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes.  Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgement to submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA® Accreditation.

The Syracuse Police Department has to comply with 165 standards in order to gain accredited status.
