According to Syracuse Police, on March 20, 2024, 4:06 p.m. Officers responded to 306 Basin St. regarding a status check. Officers arrive and locate the victim, later identified as 32-year-old Jamar Martin, deceased.
An investigation was commenced by CID Homicide Unit detectives where numerous people were interviewed, and an extensive neighborhood and citywide canvass was conducted. In addition, several search warrants were executed, evidence recovered was processed and thoroughly analyzed.
As a result of the above efforts, a suspect was identified as 22-year-old Destany Widger.
On April 3, 2024, Widger was located and taken into custody without incident in the 700 block of E. Laurel St. by members of the Syracuse Police Department Warrant and Homicide Units. She was transported to the Public Safety Building, Criminal Investigation Division. Widger was later lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center, where she is being held pending her arraignment.
In regards to this investigation, Destany Widger was charged with the following crimes:
- Penal Law 125.25, Murder in the Second Degree
- Penal Law 265.01, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree
