With no ice on Hiawatha Lake, organizers turn to Downtown Syracuse site
Vinny Lobdell and Family support Syracuse community as presenting sponsor
Syracuse, N.Y. — The 2024 Syracuse Pond Hockey Classic, a one-day outdoor hockey tournament, will be played on Clinton Square Ice Rink in the City of Syracuse on Saturday, January 27. Organizers announced the move to the predetermined alternate site on Thursday about three weeks before the event,
The competition was scheduled to take place on Hiawatha Lake in Upper Onondaga Park. With warm temperatures this winter and no ice formed on the lake, organizers will focus on conducting the tournament on man-made, open-air ice at Clinton Square.
16 teams will compete on two rinks on the Clinton Square surface. The schedule will begin at 10 a.m. Final round competition begins under the lights downtown at 6 p.m. with the championship game scheduled for 7 p.m.
The presenting sponsor of the 2024 tournament is Vinny Lobdell and Family. Portions of the proceeds from the tournament benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation/Luke’s Army Pediatric Cancer Research Fund.
“Downtown Syracuse will be an exciting place to play with the added benefit of knowing the Clinton Square facility is made for a wide range of winter conditions,” said Tim O’Donnell, tournament director. “We thank our presenting sponsor, Vinny Lobdell and Family, for supporting our community.”
Joining Vinny Lobdell and Family as tournament sponsors are the Syracuse Crunch, syracuse.com/The Post Standard and JSK Enterprises. Partners are the City of Syracuse Department of Parks Recreation and Youth and Greater Strathmore Neighborhood Association (GSNA).
