Second Chance Canine Adoption Shelter started with a dream of Onondaga County Executive, Joanie Mahoney. Over two years ago, County Executive Mahoney began the process of working on a large project that would bring together inmates and homeless dogs. She configured a team of community leaders that would help see this vision come to light.
The community, and beyond, joined in on the journey. The brilliant idea of pairing up inmates with shelter dogs was a sure way to give second chances to both the inmates and the dogs. Upon the end of the dogs training, he or she will be placed up for adoption. Our hope is that the inmate will utilize the skills acquired in a productive and effective way as they enter back into the Central New York Community.
