Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney announced today that the Onondaga County Department of Facilities Management and the Onondaga County Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting to discuss plans for the Civic Strip Transportation Enhancement Program Project on State and Montgomery Streets between Adams Street and Jefferson Street, in the City of Syracuse. The meeting will begin at 4:30 P.M. on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the John H. Mulroy Civic Center (421 Montgomery Street, Syracuse) in the Basement Banner Room.
After a brief presentation, staff will be available at project stations (open house format), offering a welcoming environment for the public to review preliminary plans, ask questions, and provide feedback.
County Executive Mahoney said, “This project is a great enhancement to the Civic Strip area in downtown Syracuse. Many people who live, work, or are visiting Syracuse walk through Columbus Circle, attend events at the War Memorial and OnCenter, or go to one of the many other attractions in downtown. These improvements will not only beautify enhance our tourist destinations in this section of the city, but facilitate easier access for everyone.”
This project includes plans for improvements and cultural enhancements, with an emphasis on pedestrian friendly areas to facilitate the movement of people living, working, and visiting downtown Syracuse. The project proposes to improve safety measures and the aesthetics of the existing streetscapes through intersection improvements that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as decorative crosswalks, pedestrian countdown timers and audible pedestrian signals. New paver treatments at the significant civic, cultural and historic assets along State Street and Montgomery Street are included, along with additional decorative surface treatments to physically and visually connect public spaces, signage, and public art exhibits.
This project is a locally administered by Onondaga County, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, the New York State Department of Transportation, the City of Syracuse, and Syracuse University.
