Human Rights Campaign PAC Endorses John Mannion for Congress in NY-22

Syracuse, NY –Today, Senator John Mannion was endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. With over 40 years of advocacy, the HRC PAC enacts change by mobilizing voters and working to elect pro-equality candidates to office.  “The voters of Central New York have a great opportunity to take a stand against MAGA politics and Project 2025 by sending John Mannion to serve in Congress,” said Reg Calcagno, HRC Director of National Campaigns. “The incumbent in this race, Republican Rep. Brandon Williams, has consistently opposed abortion rights and LGBTQ+ equality, betraying his own constituents in the pursuit of his political ambitions. The Human Rights Campaign is excited to work to flip this seat, elect John Mannion, and help to regain a pro-equality majority in the U.S. House of Representatives”   “I am grateful for the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign PAC, a tireless advocacy organization for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Senator John Mannion. “We must always stand up to and reject bigotry in all forms. In the State Senate, I’ve advocated for stronger HIV/AIDs testing and access to lifesaving medication, and I am a proud supporter and co-sponsor of the Equal Rights Amendment which will be on the ballot in November. The amendment will guarantee marriage equality and expand equality protections in the state constitution. I look forward to working closely with the HRC to combat discrimination and continuing to build a more equal America.” With 3 million members and supporters nationwide, HRC has created a strong grassroots movement to fight for equality. Rooted in community, responsibility, and resilience, HRC is dedicated to ending discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals and all marginalized communities. Strengthened by the diversity of their supporters, HRC is a national leader for the equality of citizens across the country.  New York’s 22nd Congressional District is one of the most flippable seats in the country. National Journal lists Brandon Williams as the most vulnerable House Republican in the country. Cook Political Report rates this race “Lean Democrat” and Inside Elections rates it “Tilt Democratic.”  John Mannion, a lifelong Central New Yorker and grandson of Irish immigrants, brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his candidacy. With nearly three decades of teaching experience in the public school system, Mannion has consistently advocated for students and educators alike. John Mannion and his wife, Jennifer, are proud residents of Geddes, New York, where they raised their three children, two in college and one recently graduated. Mannion’s dedication to public service and unwavering commitment to the betterment of Central New York make him a compelling choice for the NY-22 Congressional seat. Fire Destroys One House, Damages Another in Two-Alarm Fitch Street Blaze

Syracuse, NY– On Wednesday, August 14, at 6:08 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 center to a reported fire at the corner of Dudley St. and Fitch Street. Firefighters from Station 3, on Bellevue Ave., arrived on the scene moments later and found a two-and-a-half-story, wood-frame building at 151 Fitch Street, that was fully involved with fire. Flames from the home were spreading to neighboring 153 Fitch Street, another two-and-a-half-story, wood-frame home. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted. Due to the large volume of fire, and the fact that two buildings were involved, a second-alarm assignment, bringing additional resources to the scene, was requested as well. The initial arriving crews at the scene stretched hoses toward the building and began flowing water from the outside into 151 Fitch. As additional units arrived at the scene, crews were split between the two buildings in what essentially became two different structure fires. Incident commanders recognized early on that 151 Fitch St. was known to be vacant, and so ordered an outside operation, with firefighters using “master stream” appliances capable of flowing over 500 gallons of water per minute. At 153 Fitch, crews moved hoses inside to stop the flames that were spreading into the second floor and attic. 153 Fitch was known to be occupied, and crews of firefighters performed searches of the building, checking for any trapped occupants. Searches of both buildings proved negative; no victims were found. The additional firefighters sent to the scene on the second alarm provided the manpower necessary to bring both fires under control. The fire at 153 Fitch was declared out after approximately 50 minutes. The fire at 151 Fitch was declared out after approximately 110 minutes. The building at 151 Fitch was known to be vacant and suffered extensive smoke, fire, and water damage throughout. A portion of the first floor of the building collapsed during the firefight. 153 Fitch suffered fire, smoke, and water damage to the second floor and attic. One of the two apartments in that building was occupied, however the occupants were not at home when the fire occurred. Syracuse Fire Investigators were at the scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire at 151 Fitch St. That investigation is ongoing. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to Fire Department personnel. This was the third major fire for Syracuse Firefighters in a 24-hour period, and the fifth in as many days. A total of 58 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. SFD Photo
