New York State Announce $22.5 Million Grant to Increase Health Care Workforce Training

Part of Governor’s $10 Billion Multi-Year Investment in Health Care, Largest in State History Funding Aims To Prepare, Mentor and Train a Steady Pipeline of High-Quality Health Care Professionals Twenty-Eight Health Care Facilities Statewide Will Receive Funds to Assist in Training Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that 28 health care facilities statewide will receive $22.5 million in awards during the next year for training – a part of the Governor’s $10 billion multi-year investment in health care, the largest in State history – to help rebuild and grow the health care workforce and help strengthen the health care system. The Increasing Training Capacity in Statewide Healthcare Facilities awards were issued by the State Health Department’s Office of Healthcare Workforce Innovation, to increase training in the health care workforce. “With the largest ever multi-year investment in health care, we will retain, rebuild and grow our health care workforce and ensure we deliver the highest quality health care for New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said. “The health of every New Yorker depends on a strong, stable and equitable health care system, and health care workers are its very foundation.” In 2022, Governor Hochul announced a $10 billion multi-year investment in health care, the largest in State history, to rebuild and grow the health care workforce and strengthen the health care system. The need to rebuild and grow the health care workforce with programs designed to improve the career pipeline, expand access to health care training and education, to recruit care workers to underserved areas, and strengthen home care was a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic and to the continuing and existing health care professional shortages in New York State. 28 contracts have been awarded to 13 hospitals and 15 nursing homes and will provide up to $1 million per year for two years to each health care facility. Awardees may use their funding to cover various eligible expenses, such as costs related to developing training programs and curriculum and compensating staff attending training. Awardees include: Workforce Innovation Center Director Dr. Carrie Roseamelia said,“As a new office, awarding these facility grants has been our priority. We are thrilled to announce the first round of grantees and help to rebuild and grow the healthcare workforce.” The State Health Department’s Office of Healthcare Workforce Innovation supports projects that train certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, physician assistants, community health workers, home health aides, and other direct care professionals. Attorney General James Secures $100,000 from Cameo over Misleading Videos

Cameo Failed to Ensure Videos Promoting Products were Properly Labeled as Paid Endorsements  New York – New York Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday, July 24th announced a bipartisan, 30-state settlement with the owner of Cameo, Baron App Inc., for failing to ensure consumers knew that videos promoting products were paid endorsements. Under the settlement agreement, Cameo must pay $100,000 in penalties, including $25,000 to New York state, and implement programs to help ensure that all paid advertisements are properly labeled. In 2020, Cameo, a platform where people can pay celebrities to record videos with scripted personal messages, launched a service called Business Cameo that allows companies to pay celebrities to record videos endorsing their products. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) found that Cameo failed to implement measures to ensure those videos were properly disclosed as paid endorsements, which violated endorsement rules issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and New York’s consumer protection laws. “For many New Yorkers, cameo videos are fun to watch and share, but consumers deserve to know when they are watching a paid ad or a real review,” said Attorney General James. “Videos that are properly labeled as paid ads help consumers make conscious decisions about what to buy, and Cameo was not doing enough to protect viewers. Today’s settlement will ensure that Cameo steps up to make sure videos are properly labeled and consumers are not misled.” In 2020, Cameo launched a service called Business Cameo that allows businesses to hire celebrities through their platform to record videos endorsing their goods or services. New York consumer protection law and FTC Endorsement Guides require taking steps to ensure such endorsements are not deceptive, but celebrities posted Business Cameos without making appropriate disclosures. The unlabeled Business Cameos appeared as regular videos of celebrities giving positive reviews of a product or service without disclosing that they were being paid to promote the product or service. Under the settlement, Cameo is required to set up policies and programs to help ensure users properly disclose all paid endorsements. This includes maintaining a watermark system to indicate a video was booked through Cameo, requiring acknowledgements from brands and celebrities that they must comply with rules and regulations around endorsements, creating a reporting system, and monitoring for noncompliance. Joining Attorney General James in leading this multistate settlement are the attorneys general of Florida, Illinois, and Texas. States participating in this settlement include: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. This is the latest action taken by Attorney General James to protect consumers from deceptive practices. Last month, Attorney General James secured $700 million from Johnson & Johnson for deceptively marketing products containing talcum powder, endangering consumers lives. Additionally, Attorney General James reached a settlement with the three largest mobile phone carriers over deceptive advertising practices and won a federal jury trial against Quincy Bioscience, finding that they made fraudulent and deceptive statements about their supplement Prevagen. Last summer, Attorney General James, in collaboration with the FTC, secured $1.6 million from an online apartment finder for defrauding renters by publishing unverified listings.

This honor is especially meaningful because it comes from participating artists who vote for their favorite shows based on a variety of factors including potential revenue, amenities, attendance, management, overall quality and hospitality. “Artists and families alike anticipate this festival each year, often citing it as one of their favorite summer traditions,” said Merike Treier, Executive Director of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, “We encourage everyone to take full advantage of the festival by spending the day in Downtown. Using a 4,000°F torch, Eric will melt glass rods into a red-hot molten mass and shape them into impressive works of art. Don’t miss out on the chance to learn about the process as Eric narrates his techniques, the science behind them, and the evolution of flameworking from the wax-fueled flames of the 15th-century Venetians to the eruption of new innovations and applications in the modern day. This will take place on Sunday and is free of charge. You will also find great live entertainment including the Syracuse Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will provide mini-organ recitals during the Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival at Plymouth Congregational Church and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. A total of eight organists from the Central New York area will perform on Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the afternoon, giving visitors a chance to take a break and relax inside one or both churches. And making a comeback this year, the Open Hand Theater Legacy Giant Puppet with Redhouse will make an appearance on Sunday afternoon. The Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival runs from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Friday, July 26, and from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28. TSA at Syracuse Hancock International Airport intercepts firearm at airport checkpoint

Syracuse, N.Y.—Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers intercepted a loaded firearm at Syracuse Hancock International Airport that was detected among a traveler’s carry-on items at the checkpoint yesterday, Tuesday, July 23. The .45 caliber handgun was loaded with eight bullets, including one in the chamber. TSA officers notified Syracuse Regional Airport Authority Police, who confiscated the firearm and detailed the man, a resident of Utica, N.Y., for questioning him before releasing him to catch his flight. “This was the third firearm that our officers have intercepted so far this year. It’s disappointing to see travelers bring their loaded guns to our checkpoints, especially individuals who have a state permit to carry,” said Bart R. Johnson TSA’s Federal Security Director for Upstate New York. “Individuals who have a state permit to carry a deadly firearm should know where their guns are at all times and know that you cannot bring one past a security checkpoint and onto a flight. It is part of being a responsible gun owner. Instead this individual introduced a security threat to the checkpoint. Now this man faces a stiff federal financial civil penalty that is likely to cost him thousands of dollars.” “During this extremely busy summer travel period, our officers remain vigilant and focused on the mission, and I am also appreciative of the swift response of the airport police,” Johnson added. “Their dedication to ensure the security of our travelers is commendable. They are working hard every day, which allows others to take time to go on a summer vacation.” Passengers may transport their firearms for a flight if packed properly. To do so, the gun must be unloaded, placed in a hard-sided case and then locked inside the case. Next, it should be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared. The airline will ask that a small card be filled out and then the airline will make sure that the firearm is transported in the belly of the plane where nobody has access to it during a flight.
