Mayor Walsh Says New Recycling Carts Will Build on Sanitation Improvements

Statement by Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh on upcoming improvements to recycling: “With Common Council action today, we are continuing to move forward with the rollout of uniform recycling carts, following suit with our upgraded sanitation carts. The new system will make recycling easier for residents and build on positive changes to sanitation services for constituents, neighborhoods, and our workforce. It will also reduce trash and litter that is blown around the city from excess recycling that falls out of the current bins. We’re committed to implementing the new recycling program and look forward to working with the Council to finalize the process and ensure a smooth transition for our residents.”

County Executive McMahon Invites Onondaga County Residents to Participate in Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

Open Forum on Monday, July 22 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Syracuse, N.Y. – The Onondaga County Department of Planning is leading the 2024 update of the Onondaga County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan for the County including towns and villages. The Plan was adopted by the Onondaga County Legislature and 34 participating municipalities in 2013 and 2019. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires a mandatory update of the Hazard Mitigation Plan every five years. Hazard mitigation, or pre-disaster planning, provides an opportunity to identify key local actions to be taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from natural hazards. This plan will identify mitigation projects and actions that will be implemented to reduce vulnerability and enable communities to become more resilient to disasters. The United States Government requires local and state governments to have a FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plan, as established by the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, in order to qualify for hazard mitigation assistance grant funds. These programs are critical sources of Federal funding, especially for a community that intends to proactively initiate mitigation projects using mitigation grant dollars. A public meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 22, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Management Training Room located at 420 Electronics Parkway. Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting to ask questions and learn more about hazard mitigation. If Onondaga County residents are unable to attend the public meeting, the public can participate in a voluntary, 10-minute survey. Feedback from the confidential 10-minute survey will enable Onondaga County Department of Planning and the Department of Emergency Management to better serve residents and businesses before, during, and after an emergency or disaster. To complete the survey, please go to: s.alchemer.com/s3/OnondagaCountyMJHMPSurvey
