Lane Closure Planned for Interstate 481 Northbound in the Town of DeWitt, Onondaga County

The New York State Department of Transportation is alerting motorists that a one-mile stretch of Interstate 481 northbound between Exit 1 (Rock Cut Road) and Exit 2 (Jamesville Road) in the Town of DeWitt, Onondaga County, will be reduced to one lane beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday, February 27. The closure is necessary to facilitate the construction of a noise barrier that is part of the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project and is expected to continue through Friday, June 28, 2024. Construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change based on conditions. Drivers are asked to use caution when traveling through the work zone area and pay attention to all traffic control devices, including signs and flaggers. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Victor Devon Scott Missing Since February 8th Has Been Found Dead

Victor Devon Scott, age 24, was last seen on Thursday, February 8, 2024, walking South on North Road in the Town of Tully.  Since this past weekend, the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) had been utilizing patrol deputies and CID detectives to search areas where Mr. Scott may be.  Along with the Sheriff’s Office, friends, family, and many Southern Hills of Onondaga County residents, the searches had resulted in negative results.  OCSO CID detectives believed Mr. Scott wasn’t a harm to himself or others; they also believed he doesn’t have known enemies who wish harm upon him. No evidence suggests that he is under any duress.  Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office continued their search and worked on all aspects of his disappearance. Using Air One and drones, many areas were searched and examined, and these searches also came up negative. Update: On February 26, Onondaga County Sheriff’s detectives, continuing their ground search, found Victor “Devon” Scott deceased in the woods near Hawthorne Hill Road in the Town of Tully.  Mr. Scott has been missing for three weeks, and Sheriff detectives have been searching for him throughout this timeframe.  The cause of death is yet to be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.  The police investigation continues to be non-criminal and will be pending the Medical Examiners results.

Deadline to Upgrade to the Enhanced STAR Property Tax Exemption is March 1 – For seniors turning 65 any time this year, the deadline to apply in most localities is March 1

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is again reminding seniors that, for most localities, the deadline to apply for greater property tax savings through the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption is March 1. Basic STAR exemption recipients who turn 65 this year and meet the eligibility requirements should apply to their assessor for the Enhanced STAR exemption. To be eligible to upgrade from the Basic STAR property tax exemption to the 2024 Enhanced STAR property tax exemption: “It is important for seniors who become eligible this year to apply by the deadline to receive additional savings,” said New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. ”To help ensure that seniors don’t miss out, we encourage seniors to review their Enhanced STAR eligibility for this valuable benefit.” In 2023, 562,000 seniors received more than $815 million in savings from the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption. How to apply Seniors who are eligible to upgrade to the Enhanced STAR exemption should apply to their assessor’s office by the application due date, which is March 1 in most towns and some cities. Seniors should verify their exact due date with their local assessor. To apply, seniors must provide the following to the assessor: In addition, seniors must provide proof of income: 2022 New York State or federal income tax forms. (If the senior wasn’t required to file an income tax return, the assessor can guide them on how to provide proof of income.) Seniors receiving a STAR credit do not need to take action Seniors who receive the STAR credit as a check or direct deposit from New York State instead of the STAR exemption don’t need to apply or take any other action. The Tax Department will automatically upgrade them to Enhanced STAR if they qualify. Eligible homeowners who are enrolled in the STAR program receive their benefit each year in one of two ways: For more information
