Mayor Walsh Announces Open Houses for Community Grid Vision Plan

Syracuse, N.Y.– Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the City of Syracuse will host two open houses to introduce the Community Grid Vision Plan, a multi-decade look ahead at how Syracuse can maximize the positive impact of the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project on neighborhoods and mobility. The two-hour sessions will be held on back-to-back days on the city’s south and north sides in the last week in February.  The first open house takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at STEAM at Dr. King Elementary at 416 E. Raynor Avenue. The second open house is on Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Lincoln Middle School at 1613 James Street.  The Community Grid Vision Plan is the result of an urban planning and community engagement process funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. It makes recommendations regarding the city transportation network, land use, housing and economic development, public spaces and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.  The Vision Plan is based on extensive neighborhood and stakeholder input, including a weeklong design charette in August 2022 which engaged city residents in visioning and design. To lead the process, the City hired Dover Kohl & Partners, a consulting firm well known for neighborhood planning and landscape design related to major public infrastructure projects.   The City will release the Vision Plan online at syr.gov/communitygrid on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Fire in Vacant Park Street Home

Syracuse, NY-On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 6:21 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a report of a possible structure fire at 615 Park Street, on the City’s North Side. Firefighters from Station 2, on Lodi Street, arrived on the scene moments later to find a one-and-a-half-story home, with smoke billowing from second-floor windows in the rear. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted, indicating a working fire. Crews from the first arriving units began to stretch hoses to the building, while other firefighters worked to remove boards from doors and windows to allow the hose teams entry. As additional units arrived at the scene, more hoses were stretched, and once the entryway had been cleared, teams of firefighters performed methodical searches of the building. Thick, blinding smoke made locating the seat of the fire difficult, however crews located the fire on the second floor and had most of the flames knocked down within ten minutes. Crews also had to contend with ‘drop-down’ fire, which had spread from the second floor to the first. All searches for trapped victims were negative. The home was known to be vacant. This morning’s fire caused fire, smoke, and water damage to the second floor, as well as the first floor. The main body of the fire was extinguished within approximately 10 minutes, and the fire was declared out after approximately 20 minutes. Syracuse Fire Investigators were at the scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. That investigation is ongoing. There were no injuries reported to civilians or Fire Department personnel. A total of 40 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, and National Grid also responded to the scene.
