D.C. Entrepreneur Makes Women’s History

Real Estate Developer Gail Montplaisir Crosses State Lines to Invest in Underserved Syracuse Community, While Thriving in a Male-Dominated, Construction Industry Syracuse, NY (March 23, 2023)- Gail Montplaisir, President of Taurus Enterprise Group and Partner of Salina 1st is making history. For over 36 years, Taurus Development Group, under Montplaisir’s direction, has been revitalizing neighborhoods in Washington D.C., purchasing rundown, under-utilized properties, and revamping them into lovely, well-designed homes, while investing in the community. “I have spent much of my career to giving back to communities in which I live and work, including those that have been underserved and underrepresented – communities that have been left behind and left to fend for themselves,” said Montplaisir. “I believe in prioritizing the needs of the members of local communities and employing local residents to construct every project I embark on.” As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Montplaisir said, “Early on, the challenge was to learn the industry and then prove to all the older men, by whom I was surrounded, that I knew the trade. Today as then, I am usually the only woman in the room full of men. The challenge in that is that as all the men in the room often compete to be the leader, I need to be able to get a word in that keeps us on target and minimizes competition. That can be an advantage, too.    The work Montplaisir leads in D.C. increases the number of residential homes across the city, as well as the employment rate among local citizens (many from underserved communities). In 2017, Montplaisir reinforced her commitment to racial and financial equity when she partnered with Black entrepreneurs Emmanuel B Henderson III and Eli Smith to create Salina 1st. Salina 1st is the first woman and minority-led real estate development project in Syracuse, New York. Salina 1st is a mixed-use community development project that is intended to revitalize a historically under-served community located on the south-side of Syracuse where the poverty level is among the highest in the country, and, the population is primarily Black. The project creates two adjoined buildings on an almost two-acre piece of land. On the first level of these buildings, there will be retail and office spaces, conference rooms. Additional office space will be located on the second floor, and residential apartments will comprise the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors. Salina 1st utilizes a full circle approach to minimize gentrification with their project motto, “embrace, not displace.” The project is intended to create a model that can be used by developers across the country. “I am honored to have the opportunity to work with my visionary partners to help them create a model that creates greater racial, environmental and financial equity to their Syracuse community. I am confident that Salina 1st has the potential to impact the Syracuse community and inspire developers across the nation to work with their communities to develop spaces within them.”

Following Spike in Maternal Mortality, Gillibrand Raises Awareness of Her Maternal Mental Health Hotline and Calls for Full Implementation

Maternal Mental Health Conditions Are the Leading Cause of Maternal Mortality Mental Health Is the Third-Leading Cause of Pregnancy-Related Deaths In New York Women Who Need Help Can Call or Text 1-833-943-5746 (1-833-9-HELP4MOMS) Washington, D.C. — Following the release of a CDC report that showed a sharp increase in maternal mortality in 2021, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand held a video press conference to raise awareness of her NationalMaternal Mental Health Hotline and call for its full implementation. The hotline provides free, 24/7 support to women and their families during and after pregnancy Gillibrand is pushing to expand public awareness of the hotline so that it can reach more women in need. “Pregnancy and the postpartum period can be exceptionally challenging, but help is available for moms who are struggling or just need support,” said Senator Gillibrand. “I worked to establish the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline so that women experiencing a maternal mental health condition have somewhere to turn for free, confidential care any time of day or night. I urge anyone who needs help to take advantage of this resource, and I will continue to work to improve maternal care and fight the maternal mortality crisis.” Recent reports by the CDC have shown disturbing increases in maternal mortality rates, particularly for women of color. Maternal deaths rose by 40% between 2020 and 2021, and the maternal death rate for Black women was more than twice the national average. The leading cause of these deaths was maternal mental health conditions, including substance use disorder, suicide, depression, and birth-related PTSD, but 75% of women with these conditions go untreated.  The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline provides free, confidential, 24/7 support to pregnant and postpartum women facing mental health challenges. Counselors are available by text and phone in English and Spanish and have access to interpreter services that can support 60 other languages. They are licensed or certified and are trained to provide culturally appropriate and trauma-informed support. Counselors are also able to provide referrals to local medical providers. To date, the hotline has helped more than 10,000 women with an average response time of under 1 minute.  The hotline can be reached at 1-833-943-5746 (1-833-9-HELP4MOMS). More information is available here.  Gillibrand is a longstanding champion for better maternal health care. She fought to include her Into the Light for Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Act, which established and funds the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline, in the FY2023 appropriations bill. She supports the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, which includes her Moms Matter Act to invest in community-based programs that provide mental and behavioral health treatments and to provide funding to diversify the maternal mental health and substance use disorder workforce. She leads the Modernizing Obstetric Medicine Standards (MOMS) Act, which would develop standardized maternal safety best practices to prevent maternal mortality and morbidity and provide hospitals with the resources to help prevent maternal death and complications before, during, and after childbirth. Gillibrand also secured $17 million in maternal health care funding in the bipartisan FY2021 appropriations package and an additional $42 million in the FY2023 funding package. Gillibrand has also taken action to address Black maternal mortality and eliminate racial bias in maternal care by advocating for federal funding for evidence-based training programs to reduce implicit bias in maternal health care delivery. The full text of Senator Gillibrand’s letter to the Health Resources and Services Administration is available here.

Mr. Josh’s Kool School

Syracuse entrepreneur launches new kids’ Storytime YouTube reading series in sync with National Reading Month Syracuse, NY (March 23, 2023) – Joshua Olatunde, a Syracuse daycare center owner and high-level delivery service CEO is releasing a fun new series of YouTube videos for young children to inspire a passion for reading. The video series, Story Time with Mr. Josh, Mr. Josh’s Kool School is created for children from 0-6 years old. Since January, a new video has been released every Saturday morning at 10AM (EST) on Mr. Josh’s Kool School YouTube Channel and will continue until all 52 episodes are uploaded. In these 5–7-minute episodes, Olatunde, starts off with a humorous flashback of when he was a child and transitions to him providing an intriguing and captivating reading of a story. Books he features include the “Llama Llama” series and even “I Promise”, by Lebron James. As he reads the short story aloud, the text appears across the screen, so that children can read along with him. In addition to the text, some illustrations from the original story appear on the screen. At the very end of the videos, Josh concludes by explaining the benefits of reading and encouraging his viewers to pick up a book and give it a try.  “I have a passion for enriching young minds and was inspired to create the reading series based on my fond memories of watching the 1980’s hit children’s television show, Reading Rainbow,” said Olatunde. “My goal is to ignite a love of stories amongst young children who are just beginning to pick up books and speak to them at a level they can comprehend.” The reading series is his second round of releasing kids’ educational programming. He created the YouTube, Mr. Josh’s Kool School in 2020 as a multi-subject educational miniseries that merges standards-based content with various genres of dance and music. In the earlier videos, he focused on STEM-related topics. Some of the earlier videos feature nationally recognized child actors Brianni Walker from Disney’s “Magic Camp” and the hit series “Dhar Mann: and Ayush Rajimachikar from Netflix’s Michelle Obama inspired series, “Waffles + Mochi”. The channel was created to support individualized learning across all disciplines. The new series on his channel solely focuses on reading. All the videos shared on Olatunde’s channel are art-driven, short-form content to help young students excel in the classroom. Children aren’t Olatunde’s only audience. His show is beginning to catch the attention of children’s book authors, who are now requesting that he read their books. “I was hoping this series would take off, but I think I was really surprised at how many authors have approached me about including their books on my show.” From the very beginning, Josh has prioritized high academic achievement. He was raised in Chicago by his mother who worked as a real estate agent, and his father who served in the US Navy. Josh was an honor student all throughout his academic career. He attended Hunter College in New York where he earned a dual major and interned for JP Morgan Chase & Lehman Brothers. During the summer Josh volunteered at a summer camp STEM Program Assistant at Pathways for Youth in the South Bronx. This was when Josh discovered his love for working with the youth and helping them to develop both personally and academically. After college, Josh worked with Harvard University as a high school teacher in Ongwediva, Namibia where he taught Physics to high school students in rural villages.
