They asked about illegal drug sales happening right in their own neighborhoods and said that, at times, they worry about their safety. They noticed our roads are getting better – but still aren’t good enough. The Next Level Growth opportunities I will address in this State of the City are a reflection of the issues your city high school students said are most important. They challenged and inspired us to do everything we can to make sure Syracuse is a place they want to be. At a time when most people saw a city mired in mediocrity with a government teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, driving a stake in the ground that we would generate growth and opportunity was an audacious aspiration. At every stage, we stayed true to our vision of opportunity for all and have seen strong results. Syracuse Build As we grow, Syracuse Build is fulfilling our commitment to opportunity for all. We created this construction training program to ensure that city residents have an opportunity to work on the I-81 project and other major investments in the pipeline. The results are impressive: more than 60 city residents have already completed our Pathways to Apprenticeship program and are now enrolled in apprenticeships that will lead to good paying careers in the construction trades. This has sparked many discussions within the African American community about the absolute disregard for life that some have. A Community Speaks Out in Anger Not only did this crime shock this community, but an array of opinions have been expressed by Faith Leaders and stakeholders who are on the front lines within their scope of work. Bishop H. Bernard Alex responded to this shooting by simply stating, “ I Am Tired “in an opinion piece that simply states, “We can no longer abdicate the responsibility of raising our children to others. We have a legacy and a responsibility to ensure the grounding of a good moral compass that provides guidance daily to our children”. He continues, “We must rise up and take responsibility and action. The outcry of guns within the urban communities and the danger. We still have the gift of CHOICE. You don’t have to participate and allow the danger of weapons to move in and out of your home.” This sentiment has been repeated on social media and in those kitchen table conversations. Director of the Mary Nelson Youth Center, Mary Nelson also spoke out in response to the violence we’re seeing far too often on our streets. Ms. Nelson penned a letter entitled Dear Shooter, where she’s addressing those involved in this shooting that’s shaken a community, “I am writing this post to you and your family and friends. I know you are sleeping. You did overtime and time and a half the last few days. It is so very sad you feel like you have the right to cause pain to others. I know you really do not have a conscience, but we as a community need you to think this may be your family grieving you. You know guns have no intended target, and when you use them the way you have been, it has really hurt people we all love. Why do we now have to be afraid to go out in broad daylight?
