New Report Commissioned by the Central New York Community Foundation Discovers Opportunity for Local Charities’ Future

September 6, 2022 – Research commissioned by the Central New York Community Foundation has found that a combined net worth of $245 billion in Onondaga, Oswego, Cayuga, Madison and Cortland counties is poised to experience an 11% transfer between generations, totaling $25 billion over the next 10 years. The research, conducted by LOCUS Impact Investing, also found similar results for 15 counties* in the Upstate New York area. Over this larger region, the combined household net worth was calculated to be $832 billion. $84 billion of that is projected to transfer to the next generation within 10 years. The Community Foundation is releasing this data in an effort to encourage residents to set aside a portion of their assets for the long-term benefit of the region. It asserts that many of these assets are likely to be designated to heirs who live outside our community, decreasing the flow of support that Central New York charities rely on. “A robust charitable ecosystem in Central New York results in a more prosperous community,” said Thomas Griffith, vice president of development at the Community Foundation. “Philanthropy sounds like a lofty word, but what it really means is investment in affordable housing, advancement of healthcare and childcare for families, stimulation of economic growth and reduction of economic inequality.” LOCUS’s research analyzed what would happen if 5% of the assets set to transfer through Central New York’s probated estates were invested in permanent endowments for the charitable benefit of the community. Charitable endowments are invested to grow over time and last in perpetuity. A portion of the earnings from funds are paid out in grants to nonprofit organizations. Following that logic, if 5% of the assets transferring through estate gifts in the five-county region over the next ten years – an estimated $1.3 billion – was placed in an endowment, a potential $74 million in annual grantmaking could result. That could grow to $285 million per year within fifty years. While these large figures initially seem daunting, they turn out to be quite practical when you drill them down. Per household, the average value of assets set to transfer over the next 10 years is $79,700, so an average gift of $4,000 from each household would reach the foundation’s goal. The Community Foundation’s 5forCNY campaign, which was designed to encourage residents to leave 5% of their assets to a charitable endowment, presents three ways individuals and families can give through their wills or beneficiary designations: by giving to a general-purpose fund; establishing a fund of their own to create a legacy; or donating directly to a local charity’s endowment. “In just a few easy steps, the local organizations and causes that you care about could continue to receive your support long after you are gone – greatly improving the lives of your family, friends and future generations,” said Griffith. The Syracuse Poster Project marks its 22nd year with an expanded call for Poetry and Art

The group will solicit poetry on the theme “10 Syracuse Spirits” and welcome short-form poetry outside the tradition of haiku. In a special collaboration with the New York State Fair, the Project will also produce one “reverse process” poster, starting with an illustration, and inviting writers to complete the illustration with a poem. For the special poster, the Project commissioned an image by Lydia Nichols, a professional illustrator who first participated in 2007 when she was an illustration student at Syracuse University. The nonprofit Project, founded in 2001, brings together poets and artists to create an annual series of illustrated poetry posters for Syracuse. This year’s call for poetry, ongoing through Sept. 30, prompts writers with a series of “Syracuse Spirits,” and invites them to submit poems about, or in the voice of, these spirits. For example: “Spirit of Regional Taste.” The group’s call for poetry was formerly limited to traditional haiku. To appeal to more participants, the call now welcomes haiku and other short, three- and four-line poems. This year, panelists will select 10 pairings of poem and illustration. The artists of the selected posters will receive a $500 fee and $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $100 for third place. Artists and poets of the selected posters will also receive two poster prints and complimentary merchandise. Salt City Market Reveals Mural Design & Chosen Artist

Installation for the nearly 5,000 square foot mural will begin this week, followed by a community painting event. [Syracuse, NY, September 12]— The Syracuse Urban Partnership, owners of the Salt City Market, have announced the chosen artist for the large-scale mural in their outdoor dining space. Audra Linsner, owner of Three of Four Design Co. in Aurora, NY, has been selected to design and install the mural at the property’s north end. “We received nearly two dozen submissions from incredible local, regional, and national artists, and our mural committee had the difficult task of choosing a final design,” says CJ Butler, Marketing and Communications Manager for the Salt City Market. “We ultimately chose Audra’s submission, because we feel it gets to the core of the Salt City Market’s vision—food & culture uniting people.” Linsner’s design features 43 food items, each chosen for their versatility and ubiquity across many cultures and regions. Notable ingredients in the design include corn, mushrooms, coffee, avocado, rice, and of course, salt. The Salt City Market plans to release a companion microapp where viewers can scan a QR code to digitally view the mural and click through all of the food to learn fun facts about them. The goal is to make the mural even more interactive, hopefully spark curiosity and creativity amongst those who view it. “Public art helps to strengthen and revitalize communities, so we’re excited to be able to continue to contribute to the transformation of Downtown Syracuse,” says Maarten Jacobs, Executive Director for the Syracuse Urban Partnership. National Grid Offers Customers Programs and Assistance as Winter Heating Season Approaches

Wholesale natural gas supply costs expected to be higher than last winter With market prices for natural gas expected to increase this coming winter heating season, National Grid is actively promoting bill management programs and options, and increasing outreach to ensure customers are aware of the forecast and have time to take advantage of all available services and tools that can help them save money on their energy bills. National Grid’s resources include numerous payment assistance programs for income-eligible customers, extensive residential and business energy efficiency programs and incentives, low-cost and no-cost bill management solutions, and flexible payment programs. “We recognize that higher energy prices will add to the financial burden for our customers who are struggling with higher costs at the grocery store, gas pump and elsewhere,” said Melanie Littlejohn, National Grid’s New York Vice President for Customer and Community Engagement. “Our commitment is to support our customers by helping them stay warm and safe this winter. National Grid has many assistance programs available, as well as energy saving strategies, resources and tips. We are encouraging our customers to take action now, before the cold weather arrives.” Littlejohn noted that the company is conducting proactive outreach through email, radio advertisements, traditional and social media, customer assistance webinars, and bill messaging to alert customers to higher prices and highlight programs to help them manage their energy bills. Additionally, National Grid is partnering with United Way affiliates across New York to promote the nonprofit’s 211 helpline that provides health and human services information, referral, assessment, and crisis support for callers in need. How Current Forecasts Will Affect Winter Bills Based on current market conditions, National Grid’s residential natural gas customers who use an average of 713 therms during the five-month winter heating season — November 1, 2022, to March 30, 2023 — are forecasted to pay about $263 more than last winter. That’s a 39% increase for the same amount of energy use over five months, with $231 of that increase attributed to higher wholesale supply prices. The remaining portion of the increase is related to delivery price increases approved as part of the company’s multi-year rate agreement and other customer bill surcharges. For electricity, Central New York residential customers are forecasted to pay about $22 or just under 5% more than last season, with $11 of that increase attributed to higher supply prices, and the remaining amount associated with a regulatory-approved delivery price increase and other bill surcharges. The forecast is based on average electricity use of 600 kilowatt-hour per month. National Grid plays an active role in managing the natural gas and electricity purchased on behalf of customers by using gas storage and future price hedges, or locked-in pricing. Today’s forecasts factor in the benefit of the company’s hedging strategies, which are helping to mitigate wholesale supply price volatility on customers’ bills. As a reminder, the cost of energy supply is set by the marketplace and passed directly on to customers without markup. The winter bill forecasts are based on information available at the end of August and assume typical winter weather conditions. Because energy costs and use are impacted by weather and other market factors, the company reminds customers that today’s forecasted figures are approximate and based on a snapshot in time. In addition to weather, factors that determine actual costs are wholesale energy supply prices, global supply and demand, and energy use, all of which can be dramatically impacted by severely cold temperatures. Customer Assistance Customers who are having difficulty with affording their energy bills are encouraged to contact National Grid as soon as possible. There are several assistance programs for income-eligible customers, including: New York state’s one-time Electric & Gas Bill Relief credit program, which eliminates unpaid utility bills accrued through May 1, 2022, for qualifying customers. Customers can qualify for the arrears relief program until December 31, 2022. The federal Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides eligible customers with financial grants that assist in paying home heating bill. These grants do not need to be repaid. The program is administered by county departments of social service and typically runs from November through March, but the timeframe may be lengthened or shortened based on federal funding availability. National Grid’s Energy Affordability Program, which provides automatic monthly gas and electricity bill credits for HEAP-eligible customers or customers who participate in other qualifying programs. NYSERDA’s EmPower New York Income-Eligible Free Weatherization Program, under which a participating contractor will complete a no-cost home energy assessment to identify if a home would benefit from free energy upgrades such as high-efficiency lighting, attic and wall insulation, replacement of old, inefficient refrigerators and freezers and water-saving showerheads. Additionally, National Grid Consumer Advocates work directly with customers to help them manage their energy bills. The Advocates specialize in assisting income-eligible and vulnerable customers, aligning them with available programs and services offered by National Grid and local agency partners.
