Attorney General James Applauds Google for Improving Search Results for Individuals Seeking Abortion Care

Following Letter from AG James, Google to Add Labels to Search Results to Accurately Distinguish Between Abortion Providers and Anti-Abortion Clinics New York – New York Attorney General Letitia James today applauded Google for taking steps to improve search results for individuals seeking abortion care. After Attorney General James called on Google to address search results that led individuals seeking abortion care to anti-abortion clinics, known as crisis pregnancy centers (CPC), the company announced today that it will change its search results to be more accurate. Google will update its map and search results to label which facilities provide abortion care and which do not. These changes will help individuals locate the reproductive health care facilities they need without being misled. “I applaud Google for taking steps to improve their search results to help individuals seeking abortion care,” said Attorney General James. “These critical changes to Google search results will be lifesaving and will help individuals get the safe care they need. As reproductive rights are under attack, it’s more important than ever for businesses to do their part to protect access to reproductive care. My office will continue to take action to ensure that every person has the freedom to make their own choices about their bodies.” Millions of individuals rely on Google to find information about reproductive health care facilities. To be more accurate, Google will update its map and search result listings to label locations “Provides abortions” or “May not provide abortions.” Google will also be taking steps to independently verify facilities that provide abortion care. In June, Attorney General James urged Google to take immediate action to address Google Maps’ failure to distinguish between facilities that offer abortion services and those that do not, which could lead individuals seeking abortions to unintentionally visit CPCs for care. Attorney General James requested that Google implement measures so that abortion-related search results on Google Maps show local facilities that are confirmed to provide abortion services.

Attorney General James Acts to Protect Access to Reproductive Health Care at Major New York Pharmacies

AG James Reminds CVS and Walgreens that Denying New Yorkers Access to Reproductive Healthcare Services is Illegal in New York New York – New York Attorney General Letitia James took action to protect New Yorkers’ access to reproductive health care prescriptions and products at CVS and Walgreens pharmacies. Employees at CVS and Walgreens stores in other states have reportedly refused to provide customers with birth control, condoms, emergency contraceptives, and/or other medications related to reproductive health. Attorney General James sent letters to both CVS and Walgreens reminding the retail pharmacy giants that it is illegal in New York to deny customers prescribed or over-the-counter medications or products related to reproductive health care. “Pharmacies have a responsibility to safeguard New Yorkers’ health, including by providing reproductive health care medications and products,” said Attorney General James. “The actions taken by some CVS and Walgreens employees in other states have sparked concerns nationwide and have raised serious questions that must be addressed. Let me be clear: I will not accept New Yorkers being denied access to essential health care products and services. I am proud to stand up for New Yorkers’ reproductive rights, and I will always fight to preserve access to birth control and other reproductive health medications and options.” New Yorkers seeking contraception or other reproductive health products at these two major chains have a right to receive those essential products. Reports from other states indicate that some employees at CVS and at Walgreens have refused to provide reproductive health products or services, and some Walgreens employees have even mistreated consumers by publicly harassing, embarrassing, and shaming them. In her letters, Attorney General James makes clear that similar behavior by CVS or Walgreens employees at any of their more than 1,000 locations throughout New York state is a violation of New York’s public health and civil rights laws. Attorney General James requests that CVS and Walgreens provide more information about their refusal policies, which Walgreens has stated allows pharmacists to step away from filing a prescription for which they have a moral objection. It appears that the policy, in practice, may infringe upon New Yorkers’ rights. Attorney General James is also requesting that Walgreens and CVS provide more information about: The amount of time that CVS and Walgreens consider “timely” in fulfilling a prescription or completing a sales transaction where there has been a refusal. Companies’ training regarding refusals and related policies. All documents concerning whether CVS and Walgreens track refusals and/or whether such prescriptions and over-the-counter sales have been filled and/or completed in a “timely” manner. All complaints concerning CVS and Walgreens refusals at New York locations for the past six years. Attorney General James has been a leader in the fight to protect abortion rights and reproductive health care access. In June, Attorney General James called on Google to correct search results that directed individuals seeking abortions to dangerous and misleading anti-abortion clinics in New York. This past week, the Attorney General lauded the fact that following her letter, Google fixed this problem and improved their search results. In May, Attorney General James supported state legislation to establish a state program to provide financial resources to abortion providers in New York and called for a New York state Constitutional Amendment ensuring the right to an abortion. Attorney General James recently launched a pro bono legal hotline to provide legal guidance and resources to patients, health care providers, and supporters seeking information about their legal rights to access and provide abortions. The hotline is free and available in the 12 most common languages spoken in New York. To access the hotline, dial (212) 899-5567. For more information, go to https://ag.ny.gov/reproductivehealth This matter is being handled by Assistant Attorney General Jason L. Syracuse City School District Board of Education Releases Desired Leadership Profile in Superintendent Search

The Syracuse City School District Board of Education, in partnership with Hazard, Young Attea & Associates (HYA), has released a Leadership Profile Report and Desired Characteristics document, which will be used in the recruitment and selection of the District’s next Superintendent of Schools. Following an online survey and several virtual and in-person focus groups, HYA compiled the Leadership Profile and related documents as a guide in their process to search for the District’s next Superintendent. More than 751 survey respondents and more than 70 focus group participants shared that the strengths of the district are its diversity, strong sense of community, and wide variety of educational opportunities. Participants identified the Superintendent’s biggest challenges to be building trusting relationships with stakeholders, creating positive and safe school environments, and improving student achievement. The complete Leadership Profile can be found online at www.syracusecityschools.com/superintendentsearch. All members of the Syracuse community are invited to comment on the Leadership Profile and Desired Characteristics by visiting www.syracusecityschools.com/LetsTalk and clicking ‘Superintendent Search.’ Community feedback will be used by the HYA team as additional information in their recruitment process. The HYA Associate team plans to close their application process in late September 2022, with a targeted start date for a Superintendent of Schools to begin on January 1, 2023.

Residents Called to Design Lead Poisoning Prevention Project

August 29, 2022 – The Central New York Community Foundation’s LeadSafeCNY initiative is inviting residents to design projects that address childhood lead poisoning in Syracuse by increasing lead testing of children and homes. The winning project(s) will be funded with a pool of $150,000 in grant dollars. Participatory budgeting is a type of community engagement in which residents decide how to allocate funding through a process of democratic deliberation and decision-making. Resident volunteers will meet this fall and winter to brainstorm, share, and discuss ideas for projects. Attendees will hear from county and city officials, community leaders and residents as they share stories and expertise. Then groups of volunteers will develop the ideas into feasible proposals. Next spring, volunteers will vote for the proposal they believe best serves the community’s needs. In May 2023, the Community Foundation will fund the winning idea(s) with a pool of $150,000 in grant dollars. All meetings will be held at various locations within Syracuse from 6:30-8:30 pm. Food, translation and childcare will be available. To view the full meeting schedule and sign up to participate, residents can visit www.cnycf.org/budgeting. The Central New York Community Foundation is a public charity established in 1927 that receives contributions from donors, manages them to grow over time and then distributes funding to local charities to help them thrive. It is the largest charitable foundation in Central New York with assets of nearly $400 million and has invested more than $250 million in community improvement projects since its inception. As a grantmaker, civic leader, convener and sponsor of strategic initiatives, the Community Foundation strives to strengthen local nonprofits, encourage better understanding of the region and address the most critical issues of our time.
