Voices: Invest in Our Community Coalition’s Letter to Onondaga County Executive J. Ryan McMahon “Invest in Our Community”

The letter (see copy below) was delivered via email to the County Executive and County Legislators. It was signed by those listed below. It’s part of the debate regarding American Rescue Plan funds, and the large surplus the county has amassed. There’s a concern that vital needs of the community will not be addressed. Therefore, a group “Invest in Our Community Coalition” that has come together in an effort to make their collective voices heard. 7/28/22 Dear County Executive Ryan McMahon, Our community is in need of funds for housing, for mental and physical healthcare, childcare and social services, and to adequately address the lead crisis affecting young children and their families. According to the best estimate, each year – more than six-hundred children in our county are poisoned by exposure to toxic lead, primarily from paint in their homes. The poisoning is irreversible. The majority of those affected are living in segregated poverty in Syracuse. We have been told there is not enough funding to fully address this decades-old crisis. Those who speak out about the problem face eviction and the lead ordinance has yet to be properly enforced due in part to the lack of appropriate allocation of County funds. Imagine what $85,000,000 (equivalent to 2 ½ times the local dollars to the health department and 3 times the local dollars for children and family services) could do, if properly allocated, to meet community needs for childcare, mental health services and for improving our housing and infrastructure. There is also an urgent need to provide adequate staffing and funding for the Onondaga County Health Department, and for solving the lead poisoning crisis once and for all. We join with community organizations, experts in public health, CNY faith leaders, over 1000 petitioners, and many more community members that are voicing their concern about the use of funds and yet the avenues available to provide input are far from ideal. We insist upon increased community input, and transparency. The community must be heard on this issue. Our families need relief. You’re Invited to Sankofa Community Give Back 11:00am – 3 pm, July 30th

Sankofa Reproductive Health and Healing Center, in Syracuse’s Southside neighborhood, is inviting members of the community for a giveaway of items for women and families. This event is planned by our Synergy summer interns with support from staff. Location: Southside Communication Center 2331 South Salina Street Time: 11:00am to 3:00 pm Everything is free to the community and includes diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene products, baby clothes, maternity clothes, nursing bras, and more. The event will be from 11:00am to 3:00 pm Saturday, July 30 at 2331 South Salina Street. We recommend everyone to wear a face mask. There will be music, face painting, and a fresh-food giveaway, as well as multiple raffles for items including two strollers, a breastpump, a carseat, and many other essentials. “Our Annual Sankofa Giveback serves as an opportunity to let our community know we are here to support them. We are living in uncertain times and support for families in the Sankofa district is needed and is especially important considering how so many families have been financially impacted by generational poverty exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal at the Center is to reimagine what community healing can look like through radical love, mutual aid, and community-led reproductive justice for the families we serve,” said SeQuoia Kemp, co-founder and Executive Director of Sankofa Reproductive Health and Healing Center. “Our Sankofa interns are the future leaders of tomorrow and it gives me joy to see their involvement and support for our Annual Giveback. I believe we are passing the torch and instilling in our interns the passion, advocacy, and care for the Birth worker field.” Winston J. Scott, Operations Coordinator of Sankofa Reproductive Health and Healing Center Our community giveback continues to be inspired by the difficulties many families are facing in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Sankofa Reproductive Health and Healing Center intends to host a Community Giveback once every summer. Sankofa Heals thanks the Allyn Foundation, CNY Black Artist Collective, BLM Syracuse, Unchained, Doula 4 a Queen, Village Birth International Inc. and all of our volunteers for their support–and thanks community members for their donations!
