750 Cyclists from 40 States to make 400-mile Cross-State Bicycle Trip

Annual Cycle the Erie Canal tour started in Buffalo July 10, cyclists make it to Syracuse July 13 – halfway to their goal!    Albany, N.Y. – After holding the tour at reduced capacity in 2021 due to the pandemic, the annual eight-day, cross-state Cycle the Erie Canal bike tour returns at full capacity this year, departing from Buffalo on July 10 and arriving in Albany eight days later on July 17. 750 cyclists from 40 states will cross New York State as part of the 24th Cycle the Erie Canal tour organized by the statewide nonprofit Parks & Trails New York. Covering between 40 and 60 miles per day, cyclists travel along the Erie Canalway Trail, which is now more than 85 percent off-road. Since 2020, the Erie Canalway Trail has also served as the east-west section of the 750-mile Empire State Trail. Recent studies by Parks & Trails New York reveal that the Erie Canalway Trail receives over 3 million visits every year and generates an economic impact of over $253 million. On Wednesday, July 13 riders arrive in Syracuse, having completed day four of the eight-day, 400-mile tour. During their 39-mile journey from Seneca Falls cyclists will pedal past the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, then follow the canal towpath to the Erie Canal Park Camillus, where they will stop at the park’s Sims Store, a re-creation of a 19th century general store. After setting up camp in Burnett Park, riders will leave their bikes behind to have a bite and brew at a pub or coffee house in Syracuse’s Armory Square district or tour the Erie Canal Museum in the Weighlock Building. “Cycle the Erie Canal tour is a wonderful way to experience the Erie Canal. It’s fun, healthy, and good for the economy,” says Parks & Trails New York Executive Director Robin Dropkin. “We have cyclists aged 10 to 83 and they all get to experience what makes the Erie Canal and upstate New York so special.” For an map of the full eight days, visit our new interactive story map. Syracuse firefighters battle house fire in the valley section of the city 

Syracuse, N.Y. – At approximately 6:23 AM on July 12, 2022, Syracuse Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 110 Crafton Avenue, located in the south valley section of the city. The fire was reported by a citizen who was actively performing remodeling work inside of the structure. The first arriving fire crew on scene from Station 18 reported a 2-story wood frame residential structure with smoke coming from the eaves. Engine 18 began an aggressive interior attack and began extinguishing the fire which produced high levels of heat and toxic gases which spread throughout the home. As the fire was being extinguished, separate rescue crews conducted searches of the structure for any possible trapped occupants which turned up negative. The intensity of the fire burned holes in the floor and the stairway as firefighters battled the fire. All occupants of the home self-evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival and there were no working smoke detectors located in the home at the time of the fire. The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes. No injuries were reported. The Syracuse Police, National Grid and AMR also responded to the fire scene. Members of the Syracuse Fire Department Investigation Bureau are currently working to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
