Statement From Governor Kathy Hochul in Response to Congressional Testimony from Buffalo Residents

“For two days our country has heard in painstaking detail from people impacted by gun violence. Many of those who testified are my neighbors in the City of Buffalo, people like Zeneta Everhart, the mother of a young man who miraculously survived the shooting, and Garnell Whitfield Jr., who tragically lost his mother to this senseless act of gun violence. Survivors, family members, law enforcement and medical professionals came together to share their individual stories and make a unified plea to Washington: it’s time to act. “That’s why I’m calling on Congress to pass new nationwide gun safety laws, including raising the age to purchase semi-automatic weapons. We are doing everything in our power to stem the tide of gun violence here in New York but one state cannot solve this problem on its own. Though our hometown has already been torn apart, strong action at the federal level has the power to prevent future tragedies. At this pivotal moment Buffalo – and America – deserves nothing less.”

Cervical Cancer Screening Saves Lives

“Cervical cancer typically has no signs or symptoms in the early stages, so following the screening guidelines is very important….” – Angel L. Kerney, MD Syracuse, NY – In New York state, 20 percent of individuals who are eligible for cervical cancer screening are not following the screening guidelines, despite the evidence that screening saves lives. A review of data by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield found that, since 1976, the number of cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in New York state has decreased nearly 40 percent, and the number of deaths from cervical cancer decreased by 50 percent. A major factor in the decrease of cases and deaths in the state can be attributed to the high cervical cancer screening rate of 80 percent. When diagnosed early, cervical cancer is treatable and often curable. “Cervical cancer typically has no signs or symptoms in the early stages, so following the screening guidelines is very important as routine screening can identify changes in the cervix early, when treatment is most effective,” says Angel L. Kerney, MD, a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) and medical director at Excellus BCBS. There are two screening tests which help in the early detection of cervical cancer: The Pap smear and high-risk human papillomavirus testing (HR-HPV). The high-risk types of the human papillomavirus are responsible for causing most cases of cervical cancer. Both screening tests can be done during a routine pelvic examination. “Many people mistakenly believe that any examination of their pelvis includes a Pap smear,” cautions Dr. Kerney. “Only a pelvic exam that includes a Pap smear will screen for cervical cancer.” According to the American Cancer Society, most cases of cervical cancers are found in individuals who have never had a Pap smear or who have not had one recently. In Central New York, 80 percent of eligible individuals aged 21-65 have been screened for cervical cancer.  Screening rates by county: Cayuga, 79.6 percent Cortland, 76.3 Onondaga, 80.6 Oswego, 90.7 Tompkins, 74.7 Source:  NYS, BRFSS 4/2019  The US Preventive Services Taskforce has the following recommendations for individuals who have a cervix and are of average risk:  Cervical cancer screening should start at 21 years of age. Ages 21 to 29 years should have a Pap test every three years. Ages 30 to 65 have three options: Pap smear alone every three years OR Pap smear PLUS HR-HPV testing every five years OR HR-HPV testing alone every five years In general, women older than age 65 don’t need Pap testing if their previous Pap smears were negative and they have had three Pap smears, or two combined Pap PLUS HPV tests, in the preceding 10 years. “The dramatic decline in cervical cancer diagnoses and deaths over the past fifty years is directly tied to our 80 percent screening rate,” says Dr. Kerney. “Cervical cancer screening saves lives, so consult your physician or health care provider if you have questions about your need to be screened.”

Reflecting on the vision for the event BAC co-founder Qiana Williams stated, “Celebrating Juneteenth isn’t just about acknowledging a historic event, it is about reminding our Nation, our community, and more importantly our youth of the struggle our forebears endured to make true independence and freedom a reality. This is an enduring struggle in this land we call America, but as Coretta Scott King said, ‘Struggle is a never-ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.’   About Crookyln- Crooklyn is director Spike Lee’s vibrant semi-autobiographical portrait of a school teacher, her stubborn jazz musician husband, and their five kids living in Brooklyn in 1973. Two Occupants Jump from Apartment Building Fire

(Syracuse, N.Y.) On June 6th at approximately 4:42 A.M., Syracuse Firefighters were called to a residential apartment building fire at 120 Riverdale Drive in the south valley section of the city. While en route, fire crews reported heavy smoke in the area. Engine 18 arrived on scene in minutes and found heavy smoking showing from a 3-story brick apartment building. Due to the severe conditions of the fire, two occupants jumped to the ground from the 3rd floor to escape the blaze prior to the arrival of the fire department. Firefighters began treating the injured fire victims, while other firefighters stretched fire hoses to the upper floors of the structure to extinguish the bulk of the fire and search for additional victims. While searching the apartment building, fire crews found one occupant sleeping in an apartment that was adjacent to the fire apartment. Crews safely assisted that person to the exterior of the structure. The majority of the fire was knocked down in approximately 30 minutes and firefighters remained on scene to complete extensive overhaul. The injured occupants were transported to the hospital and their status is unknown at this time. One dog perished in the fire. There were no reported injuries to the 36 firefighters who responded to the fire. The American Red Cross was on scene to provide services for displaced occupants. The Syracuse Police Department, AMR, TLC Ambulance and National Grid also responded to the scene. The Syracuse Fire Department Investigation Bureau is working to determine the cause of the fire. There is no further information available at this time.
