Rochester, NY – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for the Eastern Millwright Regional Council, will conduct a recruitment from May 1, 2022 through April 30, 2023 for 10 Millwright apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today. Please note that the 10 openings listed for Millwright apprentices represent the total number for multiple recruitment regions: The Capital District, Central, Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley, North Country, Southern Tier, and Western regions of the state. Applications can be obtained online any day and any time during the recruitment period at www.easternmillwrights.com. All applications must be received online no later than 12:00 p.m. on April 30, 2023. The Committee requires that applicants: Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required at time of enrollment or bona fide offer of employment. Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required at time of enrollment or bona fide offer of employment. Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship. Drug testing may be administered at any time during the program. Must sign an affidavit indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of a Millwright, which may include: Climbing and working from heights, on scaffolds, in confined spaces and underground. Lifting a minimum of 50 pounds. Performing repetitive motions Using a wide array of precision tools, such as Vernier calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, levels, gauge blocks, and optical laser alignment tooling used for standards of accuracy. Working under conditions of inclement weather, including rain, snow, cold, heat and direct sunlight. Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time. Must have reliable transportation to and from various jobsites and required classes at the approved school. Must reside within the jurisdiction of Eastern Millwright Regional Council, which includes all counties in New York State with the exception of Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester, Kings, Queens, Bronx, New York and Richmond. Must provide a copy of DD-214, if applicable (if applicant is a veteran), at time of enrollment or bona fide offer of employment For further information, applicants should contact Eastern Millwright Regional Council at (315) 993-1120. 15-Year-Old Suspect Arrested in Connection with March 5th Shot Fired in Destiny USA Atrium

On Saturday, March 5th, 2022, at around 6:48 P.M., Officers working at Destiny USA Mall heard at least one shot fired from the center atrium area, the area in the center of the mall. The mall immediately went into lockdown, and the area was searched. Dozens of Officers responded including surrounding local, county and state agencies. When no active threat was located, the lockdown was lifted, and the mall was evacuated. The preliminary investigation reveals that there was a fight between several males in the Commons area of the mall, located at the lowest level in the center of the mall. During the fight, one male discharged a firearm that he possessed. At least one round was shot and a window at DSW shoe store was struck by gunfire. The suspect and the others involved fled the scene. A suspect in this incident was identified as a 15-year-old male. This suspect is accused of firing a gunshot in the mall common area during a dispute with another male. The suspect was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree and lodged at Hillbrook. There were no injuries reported. This was not an active shooter incident. Note: The Syracuse Police Department would like to thank all the surrounding Police agencies who responded to assist.

Department of Public Works to Convert Traffic Signal at S. Geddes and W. Onondaga Streets to Three Color Operation for Spring

Syracuse, N.Y. – City of Syracuse Department of Public Works (DPW) will adjust the traffic signal at the intersection of S. Geddes and W. Onondaga Streets from a yellow and red flashing light, back to a full (three color) operation on Friday, April 1. The bi-annual changeover is a regularly scheduled seasonal conversion to address the flow of traffic for vehicles traveling on the busy S. Geddes Street hill in wintry conditions from November to the end of March. The traffic signal conversion will return the signal to three color operation (red, yellow, and green) including pedestrian button crossings, for the spring and summer months.

Police Respond to Delaware Street Stabbing

On Friday, March 25th, 2022, at around 4:02 P.M., Officers responded to 504 Delaware Street for a stabbing call.  Upon arrival, Officers located a 74-year-old male who was stabbed in the arm.  The victim was transported to Upstate Hospital, where he is expected to survive.  The suspect, who was located on the scene, was identified as Edward Coates, 59, of Syracuse.  Coats is accused of stabbing the victim during a fight in the residence prior to police arrival.  Coates was arrested and booked at the Justice Center for Assault in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree.
