Syracuse Stage “Join us for a play made for today”: Eureka Day

We’re looking forward to a return to in person theatre at Syracuse Stage with Eureka Day, a play made for today. We hope you’ll join us. Tickets on sale now. With a mumps outbreak, a Berkeley, California private school called Eureka Day becomes a microcosm of our larger society as Jonathan Spector’s comedy plunges headlong into the knotty issues of vaccines and how we measure private preference against public health and how we decide who gets to decide. Though written pre-Covid, Eureka Day could hardly be more timely or more needed as Spector mines laughter from our foibles while eliciting empathy for our sometimes valiant and sometimes valiantly misguided efforts. And please know that the health and safety of our audience, our artists, and staff remains our highest priority. See below for more information about our Covid-19 Safety Guidelines.  Our Promise We know there may still be some uncertainty about returning to live performance. Mayor Walsh Brings Back Bike Share and adds E-Scooters to Syracuse Sync Fleet

Syracuse Sync system is up and running again with new shared micromobility partner, Veo Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced Wednesday the return of the Syracuse Sync shared micromobility program in the City of Syracuse. Standing at the corner of Westcott Street and Harvard Place, Mayor Walsh said two convenient, affordable, and sustainable transportation options – pedal assist e-bikes and e-scooters – began arriving on city streets on Saturday as part of the phased restart of the program. “The interest in alternate transportation options is growing in cities around the world.  It’s exciting to have the Syracuse Sync shared mobility system back up and running in the City of Syracuse,” said Mayor Walsh. “When we searched for a new partner to restart Syracuse Sync, we took a fresh look at the marketplace.  Scooters are in high demand, so adding them to our fleet is great news for Syracuse. It’s a reflection of what shared mobility users are looking for.” The City is relaunching the Syracuse Sync program with a new partner, Veo, the first profitable micromobility company that is operating in 40 communities throughout the U.S.  Veo’s mission is to establish micromobility as a true transportation system to reduce automotive use and promote widespread utilization of shared alternative mobility in a safe and reliable way. The City expects to have an initial fleet of 50 Veo Halo pedal assist e-bikes and up to 250 Astro electric scooters in service this fall.  They will be available at approximately 30 locations around the City, where previous Syracuse Sync bikes were available. Bikes and scooters in the familiar bright green color of the Syracuse Sync system can already be found at “corrals” located in city parks, business districts and neighborhoods. “As Syracusans seek more eco-conscious modes of transportation, Veo’s unique mixed fleet of micromobility vehicles will provide options that fill the gap between mass transit, vehicle ownership, and walking,” said Candice Xie, Veo chief executive officer. “We are thrilled to be working with Mayor Walsh and the City of Syracuse to launch a world class micromobility system featuring standing and pedal options to help more people travel through Syracuse neighborhoods sustainably.” With the Veo app downloadable on most mobile devices, the Syracuse Sync system is easy to use: Using the Veo app, riders scan a QR code to unlock the device. Standard pricing for the Astro scooter is $1 to unlock and 31 cents per minute. Halo e-bikes cost $1 to unlock and just 20 cents per minute to ride. Low-income riders will be eligible for Veo Access Pricing which waves the unlock fee for both devices. To end a trip, the Veo app helps users locate an approved parking area and take an “end of ride” photo of the properly parked bike or scooter before ending the ride. GPS and LTE enable the company to track device locations and geofence areas that are no ride, slow ride, no parking, or recommended parking zones. A list of current corral locations is on the Veo smart phone app and will be available on the Syracuse information page on Veo’s website by the end of this week.  The City and Veo expect to adjust locations and quantities of bicycles and e-scooters based on usage. Locations and system design will complement existing transportation options, including many Centro bus routes, bike lanes, and trails. The scooters and e-bikes will be available 24 hours a day, though overnight hours may change depending on ridership trends. Veo is experienced in successfully restarting operations in cities that have previously had other bike share services.  In August, Veo launched its shared micromobility program in Toledo, a city that had been served by Gotcha, the system that started bike share in Syracuse in 2019.  Gotcha suspended operations in Syracuse and other cities in 2020 due to business impacts of the pandemic. Headquartered in Chicago and founded in 2017, Veo is one of micromobility’s fastest growing and most innovative companies. Veo partners with dozens of cities and universities nationwide with exclusive and semi-exclusive contracts in its mobility share programs and is adding additional municipalities and campuses every month. Veo’s hands-on design and manufacturing process enables Veo to integrate safety, comfort, compliance, and reliability directly into the hardware, including its unique e-swappable-battery technology, turn signals, and underdeck light messaging. Fully-staged Libba Cotten Opera with Chamber Ensemble Premieres!

Syracuse, NY, September 30, 2021 – The Society for New Music presents the Premiere of the commissioned Libba Cotten Opera: Here this Day in its full production with chamber ensemble as part of the 50th Season Discovering Gold. The performance will take place on October 17 at 3 pm at Tucker Baptist Church, 515 Oakwood Ave., Syracuse, a block from Libba’s Grove. The opera is the brainchild of SNM board member Francis Parks and tells the story of the brilliant but humble left-handed singer/songwriter Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten, who played the guitar and banjo upside down and backwards. Libba grew up in the segregated South, worked as a domestic at age 9 to earn money to buy her own guitar, and at age 11 she wrote the song Freight Train, which has been covered and recorded by many famous folk and rock musicians, most recently Rhiannon Giddens. The City of Syracuse honored Libba Cotten in 1983, naming her the first Living Treasure and establishing Libba Cotten Grove Park. In 2012 the city in cooperation with Syracuse University erected a Sharon BuMann statue of Libba in the park to honor her legacy, a block from MLK School and Tucker Baptist Church. The libretto’s episodic structure moves backwards in time, honoring the way Libba played her guitar backwards. Singers include bass-baritone Gregory Sheppard (Frank Cotton), sopranos Jessica Montgomery (young adult Libba) & Dani Mitchell (Libba’s mother), mezzo Danan Tsan (Ruth Crawford Seeger), soprano Noa DeRosa Anderson (young Libba), and baritone Steven Stull (Pete Seeger). Jacque Tara Washington sings the role of old Libba. Victoria King is the stage director, and Heather Buchman, conductor. Librettist Kyle Bass, a natice of Central New York, is a two-time recipient of the NY Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (fiction in 1998 and playwriting in 2010), a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, and Pushcart Prize nominee. As a dramaturg, Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist Carrie Mae Weems on “Grace Notes: Reflections for Now,” which premiered at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA, and then was produced at Yale Rep and Kennedy Center. Kyle’s “Possessing Harriet” was produced by Syracuse Stage and Franklin Stage Company, and others. From 2005-2018, Kyle taught playwriting in Syracuse University’s Drama Dept. and theatre courses in the African American Studies Dept. Kyle previously served as the Burke Endowed Chair for Regional Studies for 2018-19 in Colgate’s Dept. of Theater, and is currently on the Colgate faculty. Kyle holds an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Goddard College. The music of composer Mark Olivieri, Professor at Hobart-William Smith Colleges, is performed throughout the U.S. and abroad in such venues as Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Sibelius Academy in Finland, Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, Glinka Concert Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland. Olivieri’s compositions are inspired as much by Black Sabbath and Thelonius Monk as by traditional concert music. Olivieri earned degrees from Heidelberg College, Ithaca College, and a Ph.D from the Univ. at Buffalo. This is his third commission from the Society for New Music. Based in Syracuse, NY, the Society for New Music commissions, performs, and records new works by regional composers, catalyzes artistic connections across Central NY, and expands the audience for new music.

Governor Hochul Announces New York’s 50-Mile Drone Corridor to Host First-In-the-Nation 5G Test Network for Unmanned Aircraft

MITRE Engenuity Open Generation 5G Consortium to Install 5G Unmanned Aircraft Systems Test Network in Syracuse to Rome Corridor Managed by NUAIR 5G Network Builds on State’s Nearly $70 Million Investment, Firmly Establishing New York’s Position as a Global Leader in Unmanned Aircraft Systems Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the MITRE Engenuity Open Generation 5G Consortium will bring 5G to the New York State 50-mile unmanned aircraft systems corridor between Syracuse and Rome. Open Generation has determined this corridor is a prime location to launch the nation’s first 5G unmanned aircraft systems testing range, a designation that will greatly enhance New York’s position as a global leader in this emerging technology sector. “Our drone corridor being selected for the launch of the nation’s first 5G unmanned aircraft systems testing range further positions our state -specifically the Central New York and the Mohawk Valley region -as the global leader in the market for this cutting-edge technology,” Governor Hochul said. “Through our continued investment in the drone corridor, we are strengthening and growing our regional economies for generations to come.” Assemblyman and Transportation Committee Chairman William Magnarelli said, “The New York State drone corridor established itself as a global-leader in this cutting-edge technology market. The continued investment in this area, including bringing 5G to the corridor, will increase opportunities for advancement of these businesses in the Central New York and the Mohawk Valley, so that the drone corridor businesses can maintain their position at the forefront of innovation in this industry.” NUAIR, a New York-based nonprofit organization that provides expertise in unmanned aircraft systems and is a member of Open Generation, manages New York’s 50-mile unmanned aircraft systems corridor and is playing a vital role in advancing 5G innovation in unmanned aircraft systems, also known as UAS. With coordination from NUAIR, the corridor will include an experimentation hub with more than 100 square miles dedicated to 5G beyond-visual-line-of-site testing and long-range flight paths -a capability critical to the commercialization of safe and secure unmanned aircraft systems.  According to Senator Rachel May, “5G technology paired with drones has many possible beneficial commercial uses. This technology has the potential to greatly improve the deployment of drones for infrastructure monitoring, installation of solar technology, faster and more efficient delivery of goods, and many others. It is exciting to see continued investment in our region from innovators.” Senator John W. Mannion said, “New York continues to grow its leadership position in UAS research and development through partnerships with next generation companies like MITRE Engenuity. With our region hosting the nation’s first 5G UAS testing range, Central New Yorkers are now developing, building, testing, and bringing to market leading technologies while competing – and winning – in a global industry. Thank you to Governor Kathy Hochul, MITRE, and ESD for your partnership and support for upstate New York.” New York State established itself as the nation’s premiere destination for drones and businesses at the forefront of innovation by making a $30 million investment in 2016 to develop the 50-mile flight traffic management system between Syracuse and Griffiss International Airport in Rome. In total, the state has invested nearly $70 million over the past five years to advance the unmanned aircraft systems industry in Central New York and the Mohawk Valley. New York receiving the 5G technology for its drone corridor represents a new milestone for the sector’s continued development in the state. Within this corridor, strategic investments are accelerating industry growth by supporting emerging uses in key industries, including agriculture and forest management, transportation and logistics, media and film development, utilities and infrastructure, and public safety. “Supporting innovative technology and emerging industries that will create the jobs of tomorrow is at the core of ESD’s mission. Both the agency and our regional economic development councils have been very focused on growing the UAS industry in Central New York and the Mohawk Valley,” Empire State Development Chief Operating Officer and Executive Deputy Commissioner Kevin Younis said. “MITRE’s selection for New York’s Drone Corridor to receive first-in-the-nation 5G technology represents a new milestone for the sector’s continued development in New York State.” “New York will be the first FAA-designated UAS test site with a bespoke 5G network,” NUAIR CEO Ken Stewart said. “The industry is looking for an FAA and FCC approved communications network that has the capability and reliability needed for safe commercial drone operations. 5G holds the promise of unlocking scalable, economically viable drone operations and we are confident that our work in New York will help determine if 5G is a suitable solution for the UAS industry.” “This first-in-the-nation 5G UAS test range will advance commercial UAS solutions and showcase the transformative potential of 5G,” said Charles Clancy, senior vice president, general manager of MITRE Labs, and chief futurist. “This initiative is a vital part of MITRE’s work to accelerate our nation’s development and deployment of advanced telecommunications technology.” Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon is positive about the concept stating, “Central New York continues to be a global leader in unmanned aircraft systems and high-tech innovation. 5G technology holds the promise of enabling the reality of advanced drone operations like package and medical deliveries and I’m excited that Central New York is leading the way.” Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh linked these developments to the city’s investment in 5G technology adding, “The addition of 5G to the UAS corridor adds to Syracuse’s leadership in ultra-high speed wireless technology. Implementation of a 5G wireless network in the city of Syracuse is already well underway with more than 175 5G sites installed. On the city’s south side, construction is advancing and hiring will begin soon at a technology manufacturing plant for 5G equipment. Having the fastest wireless service available to city residents and businesses is an important part of our Syracuse Surge strategy for inclusive growth in the New Economy. I thank Governor Hochul, Empire Statement Development and MITRE Engenuity Open Generation 5G Consortium for support and investment in creating the nation’s first 5G UAS testing range between Syracuse and Rome.” Both the Central New York and Mohawk

Attorney General James Announces 84 Guns Turned in at Community Gun Buyback in Central New York

AG James Has Taken More Than 2,300 Firearms Out of Communities Since 2019 New York – New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that 84 firearms were turned in to law enforcement at a gun buyback event in the city of Rome hosted by her office and the Rome Police Department yesterday. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) accepts — with no questions asked — working and non-working, unloaded firearms in exchange for compensation on site. To date, Attorney General James has taken more than 2,300 firearms out of communities through gun buyback events and other efforts since taking office in 2019. “Gun buyback programs are essential to protecting New Yorkers and preventing dangerous guns from ending up in the wrong hands,” said Attorney General James. “The threat of gun violence has loomed over our communities for far too long, and it is imperative that we take every step possible to eradicate this violence. My office will continue to use every tool at our disposal to keep our neighborhoods safe, and we thank the Rome Police Department for their invaluable support and partnership in this effort.” “The Rome Police Department appreciates the partnership and support of the Attorney General’s Office and the community to make this gun buyback successful,” said the Rome Police Department’s Community Impact Unit. “We are grateful for the opportunity to get guns off the street, preventing them from falling into the wrong hands, and keeping the community safe. We are very supportive of any proactive approach to put an end to and prevent gun violence.” The community gun buyback resulted in the collection of 84 guns, including 30 handguns, 34 shotguns and rifles, and 20 non-working guns. Since 2013, OAG has hosted gun buyback events throughout New York state and has successfully collected more than 4,300 firearms. In exchange for the firearms, OAG offered monetary compensation, in the form of prepaid gift cards, when an unloaded gun was received and secured by an officer on site. “Gun buyback programs are an important tool in reducing gun violence,” said State Assemblymember Marianne Buttenschon. “They allow unwanted and unused firearms to be taken off the streets, ensuring they will not fall into the wrong hands or be used to harm anyone in our community. I thank Attorney General James and local law enforcement for partnering and offering this program.” “The city of Rome and the Rome Police Department are very pleased to partner with the New York Attorney General’s Office at this community gun buyback program,” said Rome Mayor Jackie Izzo. “This is an important public service and we hope that many people choose to take advantage of this opportunity. The RPD strives every day to remove illegal handguns and rifles from our streets, but our citizens may take advantage of the gun amnesty program and receive funds for doing so. We thank Attorney General James for bringing this program to Rome and look forward to great results.” Gun violence is a public health crisis that is plaguing communities throughout New York, and this event is the latest action that Attorney General James has taken to combat this crisis and protect New Yorkers from harm. This year alone, Attorney General James has held 14 gun buybacks across the state, and has also secured dozens of dangerous firearms through takedowns of violent groups terrorizing New York. Earlier this year, Attorney General James announced the takedown of two major drug trafficking rings in Central New York, in which 15 guns, including nine ghost guns, were seized. To date, Attorney General James has taken a total of more than 2,300 guns out of communities since 2019.

Governor Hochul Issues Letter to Secretary Yellen Requesting Additional Emergency Rental Assistance For New York State

State Has Paid or Obligated More Than $1.6 Billion of ERAP Funding Governor Kathy Hochul issued a letter to Department of the Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen requesting additional Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) funding for New York State as many New Yorkers continue to struggle with rent payments amid the ongoing pandemic. The full text of the letter is below: September 21, 2021 Dear Secretary Yellen: As New York State continues to recover from the severe economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers face deep rental debt and ultimately potential eviction from their homes.  To help meet this need, the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) has been an invaluable tool in already assisting over 120,000 eligible New Yorkers who are unable to pay their rent.  However, New York State is rapidly reaching a critical milestone as all ERAP funding allocated to it by the United States Treasury will soon be fully obligated or distributed.  Given that we are at this very critical juncture, I am writing to provide you with an update of the rapid progress we have made with our program and to formally request additional funding to further meet the needs of tenants who have significant rental debt and who could face eviction and long-term housing instability without additional federal assistance. New York State began accepting applications for ERAP on June 1, 2021.  Since that date, over 205,000 applications have been submitted and the State has obligated and/or paid over $1.6 billion of ERAP assistance.  This includes payment of over $517.5 million on behalf of over 40,000 households.   Based on New York’s high level of performance, and when factoring in allowable administrative expenses, New York anticipates that it will have fully obligated all available federal assistance by early October.  In the meantime, New York State continues to receive applications at a rate of over 9,000 per week.  To further demonstrate New York State’s commitment to averting a potential eviction crisis, the State has instituted the longest eviction moratorium in the nation and has provided $250 million in State funds to help vulnerable landlords and tenants who are not eligible to receive Federal ERAP assistance.  Even with these additional State funds, New York’s need far exceeds available funding, and an additional allocation of federal funding will be required to address this crisis. Beginning September 30, 2021, the Treasury is directed to recapture any “excess” unobligated funds and to reallocate them to grantees that have obligated at least 65% of their first round of emergency rental assistance funding.  Since New York has already fully obligated its first round of emergency rental assistance and will very shortly obligate all of its second round of emergency rental assistance funding, the State has established a demonstrable need and is eligible to receive additional funds.  Initial ERAP allocations were based on a per capita distribution formula and did not consider New York’s high percentage of renting households.  I am requesting that the reallocation of ERAP funds take into consideration the number of renter households in a State. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience and thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Kathy Hochul Governor cc: New York Congressional Delegation
