DEC Announces “WomenHuntFishNY” Photo Contest Winners

Six Winners Selected out of 2,000 Entries (Photo)Small Game Hunting, Monroe County, Susan Janowski In celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8) and Women’s History Month, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the winners of the 2018 “WomenHuntFishNY” statewide photo contest. “In DEC’s first-ever statewide photo contest to celebrate women who hunt and fish in New York, we received an overwhelmingly positive response from women across the state. New York’s sportswomen were eager to share their photos and stories from their outdoor adventures,” said Commissioner Seggos. “We thank everyone who participated in the contest for their amazing submissions and appreciate their support for DEC’s ongoing efforts to encourage more New Yorkers to get outside and enjoy hunting and outdoor recreation.” After the contest was announced late last year, DEC received more than 2,000 photo entries, accompanied by hundreds of inspiring stories. The winning hunting images were divided into six categories: Before the Hunt, Genesee County: Renata Canaday (photographer), Carey Killion (subject) Big Game Hunting, Moose River Plains, Adirondacks: Rebecca Meigel Small Game Hunting, Monroe County: Susan Janowski After the Hunt, Western NY: Nichole Boxler Group, Broome County: Michelle Sanford and Cathy Sanford Youth, Wyoming County: Deanna Nikiel (photographer), Alexis Nikiel, Aleah Brauen (subjects) Winning entries will be featured in this year’s New York State Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide and future issues of the Conservationist magazine, in social media posts, on the DEC website, and other outreach efforts. While this fall’s contest focused on women hunters, DEC also received hundreds of fishing photos that will automatically be entered in a fishing photo contest that will be announced later this spring. According to the most recent National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the percentage of female hunters and anglers has steadily risen in recent years. In New York, women are the fastest growing segment of adult hunters; nearly 50,000 women are licensed to hunt in the state. On International Women’s Day, Governor Cuomo Calls for Passage of the Equal Rights Amendment this Session

Key Proposal in 2019 Women’s Justice Agenda Would Add Sex as a Protected Class to New York State Constitution On Friday March 8th, International Women’s Day, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today called for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment this legislative session. When the U.S. Congress passed the federal Equal Rights Amendment in 1972, New York was one of the first states to vote for its ratification. However, almost five decades later, the federal ERA still has not been ratified, and while Governor Cuomo has pushed for a State-level ERA, New York’s constitution still does not guarantee equal rights on the basis of sex. “As the Trump Administration wages a war on women, it is more important than ever before that New York fight back to protect our progress and enshrine gender equality in our state constitution,” Governor Cuomo said. “It is unacceptable that more than 100 years after women won the right to vote in New York State, our Constitution still does not ban discrimination based on sex or afford women equal protections under the law. That needs to end this year. We must pass the ERA this legislative session to ensure New York continues to serve as the beacon of progress for the nation.” “On International Women’s Day and every day, we honor the women who came before us by continuing to fight for justice and equality,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. “We have made significant progress, but we still have more work to do to ensure rights and protections for women. As part of our 2019 Women’s Justice Agenda, we’re pushing for a new, next generation Equal Rights Amendment that reflects today’s priorities for attaining true gender parity once and for all.” The Equal Rights Amendment will add sex as a protected class to Section 11 of Article 1 of the New York State Constitution. With this change, Section 11 of Article 1 of the New York State Constitution will read: No person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws of this State or any subdivision thereof. No person shall, because of race, color, sex, creed or religion, be subjected to any discrimination in his or her civil rights by any other person or by any firm, corporation or institution, or by the State or any agency or subdivision of the state. This proposal is included in the Governor’s 2019 Women’s Justice Agenda. This bold, comprehensive set of proposals builds on the success of the Governor’s 2018 accomplishments to improve reproductive, economic and social justice for all New York women.
