A Tribute to a Legend, Aretha Franklin “A Celebration of her life” by Music Historian, Dr. Joan Hillsman

A small group of music lovers gathered Thursday in Syracuse to light a candle, reflect, hum tunes, and simply mourn her passing. This impromptu gathering with representatives from the Syracuse Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, (SGMWA) youth representatives, Renowned artist, Sam Wynn, Rick Linzy, and others who stopped by Westminster Church, one of the rehearsal sites and partners for SGMWA to pause, say a prayer and light the candle and give reflections on how this great giant touched the world of music. The world mourns the loss of a true Diva, music humanitarian, Singer extraordinaire, Gospel legend and all other genres of music that helped us through life, and the list could go on and on.  Therefore, her living and contributions will “live on”.  She taught us how to “spell it” (R-E-S-P-E-C-T), now let’s “Sing it”, and most of all, let’s “live it”. As this great legend is being celebrated all over the world, let’s model after her teachings.  She never forgot her roots; she shared with others, taught all ages through music.  “I am so blessed to have met her and shared in some of her music experiences, as a historian and music educator”. Rest in Peace! We will forever cherish and share your contributions other generations and cultures.

City of Syracuse Releases Police Chief Search Community Input Report

The Report Summarizes Findings from Extensive Community Outreach Efforts Syracuse, N.Y. – The City of Syracuse Office of the Mayor today released a 74-page report summarizing the input collected through the public engagement phase of the search for the next chief of the Syracuse Police Department. The full report is currently available on the front page of the City’s website and at bit.ly/syrgov-report169. “I feel strongly that this decision should be informed by a conversation with the community,” said Syracuse Mayor Walsh. “We hope it serves as a foundation to continue building the relationship between the community and the police department.” The City has selected Public Sector Search and Consulting, Inc., a national search firm that offers public sector executive search and consulting services, to lead the search process. The search will consider candidates from within the department, the surrounding region, and beyond, to ensure the selection is made from the very best individuals available. The city is working to hire a new chief before the end of 2018.

EMILY’s List Endorses Dana Balter for Congress

Syracuse, NY – Dana Balter, Democratic nominee for New York’s 24th Congressional District, received the endorsement of EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics. EMILY’s List seeks to put women in office who can make significant contributions to education, health care, and economic equality. Balter has based her platform on fully funded public schools, universal health care, and creating an economy that works for everyone. Balter is also a staunch supporter of a woman’s access to quality healthcare and a right to choose. In contrast, Rep. John Katko has consistently voted to defund Planned Parenthood, strip hardworking people of their right to affordable healthcare, and give massive tax cuts to the wealthiest in the country. “A longtime educator, Dana Balter is committed to standing up for the underdog,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List. “Inspired by her brother who has cognitive disabilities, Dana has fiercely advocated to ensure everyone gets the health care they deserve. Dana knows firsthand how important access to affordable, quality health care is, and her own experience facing the fear and uncertainty that can come from having a pre-existing condition led Dana to want to make sure others don’t have to face the same concerns. Now, she is running to fight not only for central and western New Yorkers’ access to affordable health care, but also to expand economic opportunity, protect a woman’s right to choose, improve public education and more.” “I am thrilled to have the support of EMILY’s List,” said Dana Balter. “This organization has worked diligently to elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women across the country over the last 30 years. I am proud to partner with Emily’s List to help create a government that benefits fully from the productive leadership of women. In Congress, I will continue to fight for a women’s equality and autonomy, including access to the full range of quality, affordable healthcare. ” This joins a growing list of endorsements including #VOTEPROCHOICE, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, the National Organization for Women (NOW) and over 15 local elected officials. Balter was added to the DCCC’s Red to Blue Program, and a new poll showed her with a 4% lead over Rep. Katko.
