NEHDA Awarded $47,026 Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant

Syracuse, NY – The Northeast Hawley Development Association (NEHDA), in partnership with Home HeadQuarters, Inc. (HHQ) and the Syracuse Green and Healthy Home Initiative (GHHI) was awarded a grant in the amount of $47,026 as part of The Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant program, administered by the NYS DEC with funds from New York’s Environmental Protection Fund. The grant project will result in Healthy Homes Workshops & Development Program. Paul Driscoll, Commissioner for the City of Syracuse office of Neighborhood and Business Development said, “On behalf of the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development of the City of Syracuse, we are pleased that NEHDA and our local GHHI administrator at Home HeadQuarters are working to reduce home health hazards through increased access to education.  NEHDA is a trusted housing partner and community advocate in which we know will deliver quality and impactful programming.” “Home HeadQuarters, through our Green and Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) Greater Syracuse, is excited to provide Healthy Homes classes, along with community partner NEHDA, to homeowners in Syracuse—especially our South and Northside neighbors,” said Kerry Quaglia, Home HeadQuarters’ Chief Executive Officer. “These classes will increase public knowledge about environmental hazards that continue to inflict significant and long-lasting harm in our homes and in our community.” NEHDA Program Director Sarah Cowles said, “Establishing classes to teach safe renovation and maintenance techniques on the Northside will undoubtedly make a positive impact. At the same time, surveying participants’ awareness of lead and other home hazards will help track gaps in public knowledge, and inform the development of future preventative programming.” Since 1974, NEHDA has been revitalizing and stabilizing the northeast sector of Syracuse by providing and developing quality housing with an emphasis on owner-occupancy, promoting economic development, and encouraging and sponsoring community-building activities.
