Annual Fireworks Display Will Include Performance by the Blacklites; Will Be Held at Department Headquarters in Historic White Oaks Park in Celebration of Parks Centennial SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The City of Syracuse will host its annual Fourth of July fireworks display at the Parks Department headquarters in White Oaks Park on Friday, June 30 at 7 p.m. White Oaks Park is located at 412 Spencer Street in Syracuse. This year’s fireworks display will be part of the city’s Parks Department centennial program. “This is an exciting way to celebrate our nation’s 241st birthday and enjoy a summer evening with friends and family,” said Lazarus Sims, Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Programs. “We hope everyone in the community will come out and enjoy this great family-friendly event.” This year, the fireworks celebration will take place at the Parks Department headquarters, located in historic White Oaks Park. This site will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Department, which was incorporated in 1917. The Parks Department headquarters once served as a community bath and has been a site for Parks activity for most of the century. It is now home to the Parks Department’s administrative offices. The fireworks display will happen at approximately 9:30 p.m., following a performance by the Blacklites. Children’s games and activities will be available. There is no charge for admission; parking will be available on neighborhood streets. Patrons are discouraged from bringing dogs that may frighten easily from the loud noises associated with fireworks.

“It’s Family Reunion Time!..More than a “Barbecue” A Family Reunion Tribute!

To me this is an appropriate time for me to remind you of the importance of family.  Whether it is an annual “get-together”, a dinner, picnic or a phone call on special days, it is important. As we celebrate, especially during this season, although to many of us, everyday is a day of thanksgiving for focusing on who we are, what roots we came from, who are our relatives.. known or unknown. We need to know! Celebrate our roots. Thank God for the motivation of Alex Haley, the genealogy experts who brought to our attention of just who we are as individuals, and how to pass it on for generations. We did not choose our relatives; we were given to us by the Divine Creator. Celebrate them!  Here are some important reasons, in my opinion: You will know where you came from: (Regardless of the struggles or their past and yours) You can pass your heritage one to your family and their children You can be the matriarch and the family historian (guiro). I you don’t have one-find one who can tell your story and your history. Be proud and thankful, if you think you have “arrived” that you did not endure some of the pain that your fore-parents went through—if you think that you have made it, so to speak! You still have a long way to go. Help somebody! Leave a legacy of your works, faults and failures that others can remember, let you works leave footprints in the sand. So, before you take that next bit of “Barbecue”: Say your grace and be thankful that through God and family, extended family, villagers (it takes a whole village however). Pray! Now, let’s eat!  See the poem, Stay Connected by Dr. Joan Hillsman (Poetry, too, is one of my hobbies).

Congressional Budget Office Score of the Senate Health Care Bill is in and NY Governor Andrew M. Cuomo Responds

“The Congressional Budget Office score of the Senate health care bill confirms what we already knew. Republicans in the Senate are choosing to put millionaires over the middle class, cutting taxes for the rich at the expense of the health care of millions of Americans. This bill will leave 22 million more Americans without health care coverage, including 15 million more Americans by next year alone. “Just like the House bill, this legislation is a death trap for New Yorkers. The Senate bill will jeopardize health care coverage for millions of New Yorkers, raise premiums on the poor and the elderly, and eliminate more than $7 billion for New York’s health care system, including life-saving funding for the fight against the opioid crisis. It also specifically targets New York, threatening to withhold federal tax credits for New Yorkers because of our support for women’s reproductive rights. “And by including the reckless Faso-Collins amendment, this bill will force every resident of this state to pay a “Faso-Collins Federal Tax” added onto local property taxes to make up the $2.3 billion shortfall created by their proposal. “Earlier today, I called on our Congressional delegation to do everything within their means to protect this state. With the CBO report confirming the intolerable consequences of this bill, I call on all New Yorkers to make their voices heard and join me in opposing this terrible legislation.”
