Syracuse Stage Announces 2017/2018 Season, “The Wizard of Oz”, “A Raisin in the Sun” and More!

(Syracuse, NY) – Syracuse Stage Artistic Director Robert Hupp yesterday announced the plays selected for the 2017/2018 season. The six plays are “The Three Musketeers”, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “Next to Normal”, “A Raisin in the Sun”, and “The Magic Play”. The season opens Sept. 20, 2017 and runs through May 13, 2018. Season subscription packages and FlexPacks are on sale now. Although Hupp has been on the job since July 2016, the 17/18 season is the first he has selected as the company’s artistic leader. He explained that he has enjoyed hearing from patrons and learning about Syracuse Stage’s long history. The 17/18 season marks the company’s 45th anniversary. “I’ve enjoyed learning about the proud tradition of artistic excellence that defines our theatre company,” Hupp said. “It is this unswerving commitment to artistic excellence and a passion to tell fantastic stories that demand to live on a stage that drive our creative process.” Hupp makes his Syracuse Stage directorial debut with the season opener “The Three Musketeers”. Based on the famous 19th century novel by Alexander Dumas and adapted for the stage by Catherine Bush, “The Three Musketeers” recounts the swashbuckling adventures of Athos, Porthos, Aramis and the eager young D’Artagnan as they battle the sinister Cardinal Richelieu and his treacherous allies Rochefort and Lady de Winter. Hupp promises a sweeping epic full of romance, intrigue, plenty of swordplay and a hearty and welcomed dose of “all for one and one for all.” The Tony Award-winning (Best Play) “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” follows.  Adapted by Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon’s international best-selling novel, “The Curious Incident . . .” introduces 15-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone, a young man with an exceptional brain and personal challenges. When Christopher becomes the leading suspect in the death of a neighbor’s dog, he sets out to find the real culprit. His investigation will take him on a journey to a past he never knew and a future he never imagined possible. The show ran for 800 performances on Broadway. Syracuse Stage is among the first regional theatres to be granted the rights to produce this exceptional play. “The holidays are a time for family and friends to come together at Syracuse Stage,” Hupp noted, as he introduced the classic musical “The Wizard of Oz” as Syracuse Stage’s annual holiday family event. The ever-popular and beloved classic will have fresh appeal as Syracuse Stage partners not only with the Syracuse University Department of Drama, but with the New York-based 2 Ring Circus, who will bring cirque-like acrobatics to the production. The great songs and beloved characters are the same; the experience is entirely new. “This is one you and your family will be talking about long after Dorothy clicks her heels and makes her way back to Kansas,” Hupp said. A second musical rings in the New Year, the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Next to Normal”. A Broadway sensation with a contemporary rock inflected score, “Next to Normal” is a work of grace and power that cuts right to the human heart. An often funny and always poignant portrait of a family coping with its own particular dysfunction, “Next to Normal” was credited by the Pulitzer Board for expanding “the scope of subject matter for musicals.” Veteran director Timothy Douglas returns to Syracuse Stage for Lorraine Hansberry’s classic “A Raisin in the Sun”. Douglas is well known to Syracuse Stage audiences from his productions of “Blues for an Alabama Sky”, “A Lesson Before Dying”, “Jitney”, “The Crucible”, and “Gem of the Ocean”. The story of the Younger family—three generations trying to build a better life on Chicago’s South Side—“A Raisin in the Sun” speaks as “powerfully today as in 1959 when Hansberry wrote it,” Hupp said. “And Timothy Douglas is the perfect director to give us a fresh look at this great American play.” The season concludes with a one-of-a-kind theatrical event. Part magic show and part engaging drama, “The Magic Play” stars acclaimed magician, illusion designer and actor Brett Schneider in a mind-blowing spectacle that ends differently every performance. In this ultimately uplifting play, a successful young magician, reeling from a recent romantic break-up, struggles to keep his off-stage reality from undermining his on stage illusions.  “This is a fascinating new work that blurs the line of what we think of as theatre. It’s a new and very exciting experience for our audience,” Hupp said. Hupp will introduce new directors and designers to Syracuse Stage audiences, while continuing to work with those who have become Syracuse favorites. In this way, he plans to build on the foundation of Stage’s sustained artistic achievement to bring new energy and fresh perspective and vision to the theatre. To that end, Hupp said to expect several new initiatives and community partnerships in the 17/18 season and highlighted “Cold Read: A Winter Festival of New Plays”. Developed and curated by associate artistic director Kyle Bass, “Cold Read” introduces “work hot from the imaginations of some of the freshest voices writing for the theatre today,” Hupp explained. Scheduled for four days in February, the Festival will feature readings of new works and works in progress, as well a solo performance and an opportunity to participate in a moderated discussion with one of the participating playwrights. Some of the “Cold Read” events will be free. “I’m thrilled to share this great season, this terrific line-up of plays, with our audience,” he added. “Syracuse Stage patrons are among the savviest in the country and they deserve the best we can deliver. I think everyone will find something to enjoy next season.” SHOW DETAILS  The Three Musketeers Adapted from the novel by Alexander Dumas By Catherine Bush Directed by Robert Hupp Co-produced with the Syracuse University Department of Drama Sept. 20 – Oct. 8, 2017   The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time By Simon Stephens Adapted from the novel by Mark Haddon Directed by Risa Brainin

New York State Announces 2017 Regional MWBE Opportunities Expo Series

Provides Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises with Information and Resources to Help Them Grow and Continue to Create Jobs Across the State   Events Reaches Central New York in June Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the 2017 Regional Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises Opportunities Expo Series, which will take place in the Mid-Hudson, New York City, Finger Lakes, North Country, Southern Tier and Central New York. The events will connect MWBEs with New York State agencies, expert resources, information on state projects and tools to access state opportunities. “We know New York’s economy is strongest when we empower everyone to participate, and we are leading the nation in creating opportunities for Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises in every corner of the state,” Governor Cuomo said. “This Expo series will build on our momentum and connect talented businesses with the tools, resources and support they need to grow and succeed. I encourage all qualified entrepreneurs to visit these forums and see what opportunities are available.” Increasing the utilization of MWBE firms in state contracting is key to the success of the MWBE program.  In 2014, Governor Cuomo set the nation’s highest goal for MWBE procurement at 30 percent.  For fiscal year 2015-2016, MWBEs secured $1.9 billion in State contracts and under the Governor’s leadership, more than 5500 MWBEs have been certified since 2011. During his 2016 State of the State address, Governor Cuomo pledged to increase MWBE certification by an additional 2,000 businesses – the State is on track to meet that goal by 2018. The 2017 Regional MWBE Opportunities Expo Series, sponsored by Empire State Development’s Division of Minority and Women’s Business Development and local State partners will feature workshops and panel discussions about New York State MWBE certification and business development resources. It will include the New York State MWBE BOOT CAMP, which links regional technical assistance resources to MWBEs, such as the Small Business Development Center, Procurement & Technical Assistance Centers and the Entrepreneurial Assistance Program. The Expos will also include information about State-sponsored financial and technical assistance programs, including the New York State Surety Bond Assistance Program and the “Bridge to Success” Loan Program. Senator James Sanders Jr. said, “As the leader of the Senate Democratic Conference’s MWBE Task Force, I believe we should be doing all we can to empower these entrepreneurs and level the playing field in a way that helps them realize their full potential. This expo series provides critical information to MWBEs about the certification process as well as available resources, and it is a worthy step forward by the Governor to meeting the state’s 30 percent MWBE contracting goal. I look forward to continuing to work with the Governor in the future to meet and exceed that goal.” Mid-Hudson Thursday, March 16 Marist College Murray Student Center 3399 North Road Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 New York City Thursday, April 13 Lehman College Music Building 250 Bedford Park Blvd West Bronx, NY 10468 Finger Lakes Thursday, April 20 Rochester Educational Opportunity Center 161 Chestnut Street Rochester, NY 14604 North Country Thursday, May 18 Clinton Community College Stafford Technology Center 136 Clinton Point Drive Plattsburgh, NY 12901 Southern Tier Thursday, June 1 The Clemens Center 207 Clemens Center Parkway Elmira, NY 14901 Central New York Thursday, June 22 The Oncenter 800 South State Street Syracuse, NY 13202 More information is available here.
